A) Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-VT, President Pro Tempore of the Senate and third in line to the presidency, announces he won’t seek reelection next year. First elected in 1974. Chairs the Appropriations Committee.

Is the only Democrat ever elected to the Senate from Vermont.

B) Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) caucuses with the Democrats. Late Sen. Jim Jeffords (I-VT) caucused with the Democrats at the end of his career.

There is an outside chance that a Murkowski RINO type Republican could win this one. Vermont has elected those types on the state level in the past, and considering the current environment for Dems...

But, like I said, an outside chance... I'm putting no money on it.

I remember him, and always will, when he gave a speech on the Senate floor while he was so drunk you could hardly understand a word he was saying.

True enough, but when you’re in the minority the power and the perks disappear, and the funding goes with them. Being a senate committee chairman is a very powerful position. Being just a member...especially a minority member.... of the committee, not so much.
