Leahy has been barely aware of his surroundings for years and he’ll almost surely be replaced by another Dem or a socialist. Why announce now?
I wouldn’t be surprised if they are trying to spread out the retirements to make it look less like a disaster. Feinstein is likely to be next, but Newsome probably wants a week or two between scandals before he appoints himself and he keeps stepping on rakes.
On the Republican side, Grassley, Shelby, and Inhofe should also be shuffling off to the Villages or writing their memoirs as well. McConnell is also pushing 80. Sure folks can be clear headed and effective in advanced ages, but the longer someone is sitting in a job and not training a replacement, the longer people otherwise qualified to be prepared to step up are getting passed over and resentful.
Nobody should be bigger than the office they hold and nobody should consider their elected office an entitlement.
No loss! Now if only about 75 others would retire.
