The dirty little secret that has been erased from almost all the history books is that many of the tribes perfected the art of extended torture, and then partook in cannibalizing the victim, so they could absorb his strength. If you read some of the diaries written by colonists/Americans about their Indian captivity, it was brutal.
These Indians treated captives of other tribes much more horrid than anything the Europeans ever did to them.

We didn't steal it. It was basically unoccupied. Read the Journals of Lewis and Clark (or Undaunted Courage) and see how rare their encounters with Indians were as they journeyed from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean.
