Did I forget to mention that if Mount Rainier ever blows out on the northwest side, it will instantly melt trillions of pounds of snow which will flow down a river basin right into downtown Tacoma?
******************************
Oh yeah....WELL aware of that one.
It’ll actually flow down FOUR river basins: the Nisqually, the White, the Carbon and the Puyallup river valleys. Several thousands of people live in those valleys. And, since I drive around with my job in 3 of those, I can tell you that there no possible way the majority of those people can get out of the way in time...unless they had SEVERAL HOURS of warning. If it’s a bolt-out-of-the-blue eruption with no warning, the communities closer to The Mountain have about 20-30 minutes to get to higher ground. The bigger communities closer to Tacoma have 35-45 minutes.
(Actually, the chances that there won’t be any warning at all are small. Rainier has many seismographs on its flanks and scientists now have a better idea what to watch for after Mt. St. Helens blew. It also depends on if people ignore any possible warnings should that occur. People can be REALLY dumb, y’know.)
There are NOT a lot of roads that lead out of those 3 valleys I drive around in (not sure about Nisqually, too far south for me).

As for downtown Tacoma, most of it will be spared, as a good chunk of Tacoma rises rapidly away from the Puyallup tide flats. It WILL, however, pretty much destroy the Port of Tacoma, which is one of the largest shipping container ports in the US.

Never mind the ping list, who manages the exploding volcanos?

I’m concerned about the air pollution and the effects on climate. Didn’t this volcano listen to Greta?

The volcano caused an atmospheric disturbance. Pressure dip and wave.
My son in Dallas has a little weather station. It recorded the disturbance about 20 min later.
Halfway around the world!

In the last 24 hours we've seen a huge explosive volcanic eruption from the Tongan island of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai - the blast is so large it's easily visible from multiple satellites in geostationary orbit, tens of thousands of miles up. The blast sent a soundwave around the world which is still being measured and the resulting tsunami caused flooding around the pacific ocean.

The eruption is estimated to be a high 5 or a low 6 on the VEI scale according to this article.
