It’s All Good Bakery on Oakland's Martin Luther King Jr. Way looks like many bakeries in the area, offering up sweet potato pie and coconut pineapple cake. But recently, the small neighborhood storefront has become the center of controversy — namely because the building, which was the first headquarters of the Black Panther Party (BPP), might get demolished and rebuilt as a five-story, 20-unit mixed-use housing complex.
On Monday evening, dozens of members of the public joined the Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board meeting to discuss the historical significance of the building. After the firm Gunkel Architects presented a mock-up of the proposed remodel, attendees questioned whether they had adequate knowledge of the Black Panther Party’s significance and history.
“That history has not been studied by the two gentlemen who just spoke,” said Oakland resident Omowale Fowles following the presentation.
“There are no Black architects in this firm,” said Cathy Leonard, a resident who lives across the street from the bakery. “It’s just gentrifying my neighborhood, erasing Black people from Bushrod and Santa Fe.”
The BPP has a storied and complex history in the Bay Area. Founded in 1966, the armed, Black nationalist group fed children in their Free Breakfast for School Children Program and called to end police brutality decades before the Black Lives Matter movement. Today, their legacy continues to inspire modern iterations of their grassroots programs throughout Oakland.

Nuke it from orbit and save the cash.
I think Brandon & Co. should declare it a National Monument & Shrine where we all can go fall on our knees and give thanks for radical black murderous commies.
why not place a black panther statue out front...
I think their racist attitudes to new building ideas are deplorable.
But otherwise I agree that the building should be a historical monument.
But they might also want to consider what that development would bring to their black community unless they’re expecting a lot of tourists.
OK. Let’s wait until March. It is Black History Month after all.
Black Panthers were for the most part not designed to help black people, the purpose was to kiss up tp white people.
The lefties have a twisted sense of fairness when it comes to things like this.
Like H Rap, Huey,and Stokley?
I Think they should give it the reconstruction given that building in LA where the SLA met their end.
What a joke site. Can’t even use ‘it’s’ properly in the headline!
It’s genocide I tell ya.
They took over TV commercials so they are in no danger of being “erased”.
I think you are missing the point.
Turn their nonsense arguments against them.
Look let’s face it we know what kind of housing they are talking about. And what wrong with putting people in a place they can live if they can afford it.
