The choice in North Dakota’s U.S. Senate race, according to one of the candidates, is a simple binary: a bowl of oatmeal, or an egg-avocado breakfast platter.
That metaphor was recently posted on Facebook, in meme form, by Rick Becker, a Republican state lawmaker who just launched a primary campaign to unseat Republican incumbent Sen. John Hoeven.
Neither of their names are referenced. But the suggestion is clear: Becker—a fire-breathing MAGA conservative popular with the state’s ultra-right—is meant to be the exciting, appetizing choice.
And Hoeven—a reserved two-term senator who is as likely to appear on an agriculture policy newscast as he is on Fox News—is meant to be the bland oats.
That the essence of Becker’s pitch to GOP primary voters is comparing the excitement inspired by breakfast foods is perhaps the most revealing window into what this race is really about.
In the age of Donald Trump, plenty of Republican incumbents have found themselves on the wrong side of the ex-president—and the party base he commands—for defying him, disagreeing with him, or even simply not doing enough to support him.
It’s almost impossible to claim Hoeven is guilty of any of that. Only four current GOP senators have voted with Trump more often than Hoeven, according to FiveThirtyEight.

Representatives of the people should be continually looking over their shoulders.
Exactly.
Gee, why aren’t waffles, French toast, or bacon on the menu?
Every RINO who didn’t object to the Stolen Election needs to be primaried by a real MAGA Republican. EVERY ONE!
Yahoo Partisan Media Shill and Stooge alert.
If they aren’t going to stand for anything to stop the current @sshole in office, then a red wave is just as worthless as a blue one. Trump endorsed or not, they arent going to stand for anything, they are as worthless as a discarded tampon being chewed on by rats….democRATS. If they start standing for something around election day, don’t vote for them. Typical RINO trick! Its how McCain kept gettingelected. Posing as a conservative before the election and actinglike a democrap after.
Hoeven is an amnesty voting Bush League Republican that wants to again vote to abandon the rule of law and surrender the country to illegal aliens and a permanent Democrat majority.
He also voted for the Biden Boondoggle Infrastructure bill.
We can’t keep re-electing the same Assistant Democrats and expect them to not assist the Democrats.
It’s insanity.
I don’t assume Becker is any more conservative than Hoeven. He could be a phony RINO pretending to be in Trump’s mold. RINO’s do that kind of thing. Recall that Kinsinger ran as a Tea Party candidate.
Notice that his attack on Hoeven is not over actual issues. He’s talking about nothing really. Does Becker have any track record? If I lived in ND I’d probably vote for Hoeven.
Good, Good, GOOD!!!
Now, if voting still matters, maybe we have a chance.
I want to go back to when men were men and G-men were scared.
Truer words were never spoken.
Skeletor would put on his NRA and Border Patrol hat around election season, and his La Raza hat all other times.
I couldn’t stand that guy. No one will ever convince me he didn’t throw the election for 0bama.
The founders intended that a Senator only server one term, and that they were to be selected by each State’s legislature as a safeguard against mob rule.
Some of the Trump endorsed seem bought and paid for by Klaus Swab.
Which is why the open primary should be illegal. The Republican Party would have to figure out what its base really is - without input from the Democrats.
Hoven may have voted with Trump most of the time but was not there when President Trump and the real Republicans needed him. He can get back on the turnip truck. Best Democrat North Dakota has had since Byron Dorgan.
Who does The Turtle support?
Vote the other way. The Turtle is NOT your friend.
Hoeven has already vote once for amnesty.
He should not get THREE tries like Flimsey Grahamnesty.
Okay, but what’s Becker’s position? Notice he doesn’t say anything about that vote. I smell RINO.
Repeal the 17th Amendment.
Senators are SUPPOSED to be chosen by their State legislature, not a public vote. That’s how the U.S. Constitution was written and ratified. Senators represented the interests of their home States, while the public had Representatives in the directly elected House.
But the 17th Amendment gave Senators’ selection to a public vote and things haven’t been the same since. Watch how many out-of-staters come to campaign in Senate elections this year.
We already know Hoeven is a vote for amnesty.
And trillion dollar boondoggles.
Keep electing Assistant Democrats and they will keep assisting the Democrats.
Try someone new.
If he’s bland then it means he is spineless.
