Russian President Vladimir Putin announces a "military operation" in Ukraine's Donbas region
He urges Ukrainian soldiers in eastern Ukraine to lay down weapons and return to their homes
Putin warns that Moscow's response will be "instant" if anyone tries to take on Russia
Ukraine's foreign minister accuses Russia of starting a full-scale war, and urges the UN "to do everything possible" to stop it
BBC Kyiv correspondent James Waterhouse says a Ukrainian government official has given an indication of the breadth of the Russian military action so far.
The official says there have been cruise missile strikes launched this morning on Kyiv, as well as troop movements in Odessa to the south of the country.
Troops have also been crossing the border in Kharkiv, about 25 miles from the Russian border, the official says.
Early signs according to witnesses and government officials are that this is something quite large-scale, Waterhouse says.
There are also multiple reports from local media citing Ukraine's Interior Ministry which says some of the missile strikes have attacked Ukraine's military missile command centres and military headquarters in Kyiv.
Russia's defence ministry has denied attacking Ukrainian cities - saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defence and air forces with "high-precision weapons".

Europe is going to reap the slaughter they brought upon themselves by appointing women to lead them.
What worthless people they have become!
Putin is going to go for broke I think. Moldova, Romania and Poland had better be ready.
Helluva price to pay for being Stylish.
1 Timothy 2:12 comes to mind.
When a society is run by women, that’s one of the final straws. The last straw would be a homosexual.
No they have not. But there’s some awesome file footage running on the MSM.
Yep, President Buttwipe.
Who asked you, Putinist?
I am thinking, will this become a third time the Poles defend Western Civilization?
A bordering “country” flirting with NATO was definitely a security threat to Russia.
You will get my opinion whether you ask for it or not.
Putinist?
Did you invent that term yourself?
You must be proud.
How? The idea that NATO would invade Russia is absurd. Long term, if Putin played niced, we probably would have disbanded it altogether or let Russia in. Now, there is no way that is going to happen. Instead of reducing a non existent threat, he just created one.
Everything Trump accomplished over the last four years, was canceled with one stroke of Biden’s pen. And this is the result.
That is the truth.
Just like Putin invading Ukraine to "liberate" it! You learn well from your daddy.
***but if Biden were to apply his Ukraine policy to Taiwan***
Just like his Afghan policy. “THOSE WHO WISH TO SAVE THEMSELVES, FOLLOW ME!” as he lit a shuck for the border.
***Traffic jams when leaving Kiev under the howl of sirens.***
My Sister-in-Law saw that in Los Angeles in October 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was a MADHOUSE of traffic leaving LA!
I’ll take a vague “inevitably” over a virtually sure thing major nuclear war in 50 years max.
Well, a couple Maggie Thatchers might not be so awful.
Putin will have his Ukraine no matter what we do in the realm of “sanctions”. He’s not backing down at this point. After consolidating his position there he will turn his attention westward, to the eastern portions of Poland that used to belong to the Russian Empire.
His ultimate goal is to reestablish Greater Russia. The mask is off now. He’s a madman from the old school. Someone from inside Russia will have to depose him. That is why we must hit them with extreme sanctions that will cripple the elite and his inner circle. The Russian people are probably appalled at all this. The economy will crater, and something will have to be done to get rid of the dictator before he destroys their country.
One point - the “Russian majority” — it’s not that simple.
Much of Ukraine until really the 1990s or even until 2022 didn’t have a sense of “nation” i.e. if you asked a Kharkiv native “Are you Russian or Ukrainian”, (s)he’d say “I’m from here”.
Russian-speakers didn’t feel more “Russian”.
You must realize that the distinction between “Russian ethnic” and “Ukrainian ethnic” is not with a hard distinction - it’s like asking the difference between a New Englander and a New Yorker. There is a continuum.
Exactly. If Putin did not act like an animal in need of caging, no need to cage him.
Now we gotta go on a painful to all (well, almost all) 5-10 year program to reduce Russia to economic rubble. And so far Biden has shown us little sign that he knows how to do it, or even how to minimize the pain to us.
Has anyone seen or heard when Bite Me will be on TV? I dread listening to the inept senile fool, but, under the circumstances it is my duty to do so.
