Russian President Vladimir Putin announces a "military operation" in Ukraine's Donbas region
He urges Ukrainian soldiers in eastern Ukraine to lay down weapons and return to their homes
Putin warns that Moscow's response will be "instant" if anyone tries to take on Russia
Ukraine's foreign minister accuses Russia of starting a full-scale war, and urges the UN "to do everything possible" to stop it
BBC Kyiv correspondent James Waterhouse says a Ukrainian government official has given an indication of the breadth of the Russian military action so far.
The official says there have been cruise missile strikes launched this morning on Kyiv, as well as troop movements in Odessa to the south of the country.
Troops have also been crossing the border in Kharkiv, about 25 miles from the Russian border, the official says.
Early signs according to witnesses and government officials are that this is something quite large-scale, Waterhouse says.
There are also multiple reports from local media citing Ukraine's Interior Ministry which says some of the missile strikes have attacked Ukraine's military missile command centres and military headquarters in Kyiv.
Russia's defence ministry has denied attacking Ukrainian cities - saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defence and air forces with "high-precision weapons".

Ukraine's election map, year after year, is even more reliably split between red/blue - west/east, than the USA's electoral map.
If the goal is a land-corridor to Crimea, that is the 'blue' area for sure, but how much Russian-speaker support can Russia count on?
I believe there was polling that showed that a super majority of Ukrainians, even in the East, oppose what is happening. It is not as “split” as you believe, or as the Russian propagandists want us to believe.
Putin announces in a televised speech the start of a military operation against Ukraine and declares that Russia aims to disarm the neighbouring country.
Calls on the Ukrainian military to “lay down its arms.”
Explosions are being heard in several Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Kharkiv.

Putin turns out to be a fool. He had what he wanted. Now after the initial exhilaration, he will find himself in a bloody quagmire that will not only return Russia to the grim poverty and isolation of the communist era but will ruin his country for many decades. He could not have made a worse decision.
We will see by morning.
Mariupol is within DNR, its liberation is expected.
What is happening in Odessa is not clear yet.
Likewise, it is certain that Russian tanks are crossing the border with occupied part of DNR now (and the Ukes acknowledged losing one town)... but invasion from Belorus? — no clear evidence of this yet.
Me, too. Though I guessed any action would be in the Donetsk/Luhansk region, where ethnic Russians are in the majority.
Mariupol “liberation”??
Taiwan is more difficult to attack, but if Biden were to apply his Ukraine policy to Taiwan,it would display a weakness that China would be hard pressed not to exploit. Our enemies want to gobble up everything possible before a Trump might come to power here.
I think you’re right. Russia would be stupid to attack Poland.
Golly. Putin doesn’t fear Chomo Joe. Comeone man!
I expect Polish troops to move into West Ukraine fairly soon.
Me too

I hope you are right.
Traffic jams when leaving Kiev under the howl of sirens.
The DPR artillery hit the headquarters of the operation of the joint forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donbas.
The headquarters, which houses the entire command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which manages the Ukrainian military, is burning well.
If the losses are confirmed, we can assume that the Ukrainian General Staff has lost control of its troops.
He called it a demilitarizing and denazifying operation. So it seems like any Uke military is a target anywhere in the country. My guess is that they will not go far past the disputed areas.
But who knows?
I am curious about what brings you to that conclusion. I ask in the spirit of genuine curiosity.
