BBC Kyiv correspondent James Waterhouse says a Ukrainian government official has given an indication of the breadth of the Russian military action so far.
The official says there have been cruise missile strikes launched this morning on Kyiv, as well as troop movements in Odessa to the south of the country.
Troops have also been crossing the border in Kharkiv, about 25 miles from the Russian border, the official says.
Early signs according to witnesses and government officials are that this is something quite large-scale, Waterhouse says.
There are also multiple reports from local media citing Ukraine's Interior Ministry which says some of the missile strikes have attacked Ukraine's military missile command centres and military headquarters in Kyiv.
Russia's defence ministry has denied attacking Ukrainian cities - saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defence and air forces with "high-precision weapons".

I don’t think a man of his wealth cares about the high price to his own people or anyone else. He is out to restore the Empire not out of love for his country but because he resents the humiliation of its defeat in the Cold War. The election of Obama and Biden gives Putin the best opportunity to recreate an empire any tyrant could ask for. His mistake (or that of his Neocon handlers) was to urge Ukraine to join NATO, and to tell Putin that he had no say in who joins NATO.

You think the Chinese are gonna want Putin and his family around, as a potential focus of Russian resistance (or hatred), if they survive the exchange, after they take over Russia’s territory? Putin and his nearest and dearest will become organ donors. Putin’s not a moron. He knows if Russia dies in a nuclear conflagration, his entire family dies with it. Whereas a conventional defeat might not even result in his loss of power, let alone his personal demise.

If they want to stop NATO expansion, they have to strike first. Like Operation Icebreaker. We would have no sooner allowed Canada or Mexico to join the Warsaw Pact. I think they will simply negotiate for Crimea.
