Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took a swipe at former President Donald Trump on Monday for calling Russian President Vladamir Putin a “genius” as troops prepared to invade Ukraine.
The jab is the latest sign of friction between the two longtime friends and fellow Republicans that began after Christie criticized Trump over the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. Both men are possible 2024 White House contenders.

The context as in understand it was in Putin calling his invasion force “peace keepers” and Trump commenting on the branding. I haven’t seen the actual quote
Apparently someone people don’t know that the word “genius” does not mean you think what they are doing is good, nor is it “praise.”
Hitler was a genius at domestic politics and political manipulation. That doesn’t mean what he did with it was a good or admirable thing, nor does acknowledging this mean you are “praising” Hitler.
Christie is slim, too. It’s called “sarcasm”, chubby!

Trump called Putin “smart”, never called him a genius.
Trump was not praising Putin, he was warning people that Putin is smart enough to know when to take advantage.

I think it’s generally a good idea to avoid making the “other than that how did you like the play” type arguments altogether, e.g. “Sure he committed genocide, but he made the trains run on time” whenever possible.
