With Russian forces besieging Mariupol, in which 120,000+ ethnic Greeks live, SKAI news spoke with a Mr Kiouranas who lives in the city and exposed that Ukrainian “fascists” are killing people for trying to leave the city.
When asked by SKAI news if he planned to leave the city, Kiouranas responded “how can I leave? When you try to leave you run the risk of running into a patrol of the Ukrainian fascists, the Azov Battalion.”
“They would kill me and are responsible for everything,” he added.
Who are the Azov Battalion?
Azov Special Operations Detachment (Ukrainian: Окремий загін спеціального призначення «Азов»), or Azov Battalion, is a right-wing extremist and neo-Nazi unit of the National Guard of Ukraine, based in Mariupol, in the Azov Sea coastal region.
In 2014, the regiment gained notoriety after allegations emerged of torture and war crimes, as well as neo-Nazi sympathies and usage of associated symbols by the regiment itself, as seen in their logo featuring the Wolfsangel, one of the original symbols used by the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich.
Representatives of the Azov Battalion say that the symbol is an abbreviation for the slogan Ідея Нації (Ukrainian for “National Idea”) and deny connection with Nazism.
In 2014, a spokesman for the regiment said around 10–20% of the unit were neo-Nazis.
More than half of the regiment’s members speak Russian and come from eastern Ukraine, including cities of Donetsk and Luhansk.
In 2018, the U.S. House of Representatives also passed a provision blocking any training of Azov members by American forces, citing its neo-Nazi connections.
The House had previously passed amendments banning support of Azov between 2014 and 2017, but due to pressure from The Pentagon, the amendments were quietly lifted.

If they didn’t want to die, they should have stayed in Russia. If they kill them they insure that they won’t have to face them again once they are rearmed.
If Ukraine is so bad why are 120k Greeks living in Mariupol?
Greeks come from Greece, not Russia.
Our allies.
“If Ukraine is so bad why are 120k Greeks living in Mariupol?”

I suspect the Greek expatriates are very fond of Mariupol… just not in time of war.
OK, I don’t know their history there.
Most of those Greeks were there since late 1700s, Catherine the Great moved a bunch of them there from Crimea
Also this article really downplays how bad Azov is.
The US congress didn’t just forbid funding to Azov because of their ideology, but because of their documented war crimes against ethnic Russians in Donbas, documented by OSCE and UNHCR, amnesty international too. Volunteer battalions in Ukraine like Azov, Aidar, Donbas were really wicked. The govt of ukraine under poroshenko knew and did nothing to stop it
If not for the blackout in the Western media, you’d know that Israel’s citizen was shot by border guards on the Ukrainian-Polish border for merely being a Jew recently.
All black people trying to free Ukraine are turned away by Poland and the hotels back in Ukraine refuse to house them.
I approach all journalism with skepticism. Did the journalist really know the true motive and thinking of the shooter when it happened on the border? Is there some motive for the journalist to push some narrative?
Also every country has right to control its border and decide who comes in. I wouldn’t be so quick to judge.
There are photos on google of US Military advisors training them, as they were wearing those nazi emblems. It’s a pretty sorry sight to see them hanging with them.

I don’t blame these non-Ukrainian men for being fearful. It would be nice, though, if they did not cry racism at every opportunity. While whining gets them attention, it doesn’t reflect well on them.
I am very skeptical.
I saw the videos from another source, a lot of the blacks denied entry on the train were men. But it is illegal right now for all men between the ages of 18-60 to leave the country, so how they jump to assume this is racism.
Also, is it really wrong for Ukrainians to prioritize their own nationals to flee the country over economic migrants? It isn’t clear to me. And it is quite understandable.
That is for the trains leaving kiev. The border situation with Poland is a different issue and story. Does Poland have the right to decide which nationals they admit in? Yes. Isn’t it quite likely that the Africans are in reality economic Migrants who would be unlikely to want to return to Ukraine? Of course! It is normal for countries to treat economic migrants quite differently from true refugees.
Poland can accept Ukrainians and turn back africans if they want. Ukrainians can mix readily in Polish society, there is a very large number there already and they’d be happy to have far more.
I would not be surprised if this article is badly downplaying what percentage of these Africans that are actually men travelling alone— the press was very guilty of this when it came to Syrian refugees.
” The govt of ukraine under poroshenko knew and did nothing to stop it”
The Kiev government after the coup wanted the nazi elements out of town pronto, so they pointed them to the east and told them to try to gain control of areas that didn’t follow the coup government. The main goal was to keep Svoboda and Right Sector out of Kiev so they didn’t make trouble for the new leaders.
If you’re old enough to fight and defend the Ukraine... You stay and fight... Or, you hide in your basement... This dude is obviously going to hide in his basement and die like a coward.
Hmm, "ethnic"? So what country is Mr. Kiouranas a citizen of? If he is a Ukrainian citizen of fighting age he may be expected to fight for his country rather than fleeing.
AFP reported on the 24th:
As tensions over an invasion ran high earlier this month, a Greek expatriate died in a clash in eastern Ukraine which Athens blamed on Ukrainian soldiers.
Two other ethnic Greeks were injured, the Greek foreign ministry said.
Oops, meant to include you guys in my post #19.
Also, meant to say: To be fair, the Greek foreign ministry also said 10 ethnic Greeks have been killed in the bombing.
Finger slipped and posted before I was ready.
Anyway, I would not want to be a Greek there. Bombed by Russians, threatened with death up-close-and-personal and by Azov.
