During his presentations of a bill that would enter the state of Mississippi into an interstate compact with Arkansas and Tennessee, the Senate sponsor completely omitted that, if passed, the law would create an unelected quasi-governmental entity with very broad powers, including eminent domain. The bill went on to pass the state Senate unanimously on February 3.
SB2716, sponsored by Republican Senator David Parker (R-DeSoto), is a 17-page document that creates the RegionSmart Development District (District) and the RegionSmart Development Agency of the Greater Memphis Region (RegionSmart Development).

Just what we need.....another law that will make a bigger bureaucracy and a lot of people rich at taxpayers expense......
Government never gets smaller....
It appears to be worse than that. Giving powers to an un-elected board that can exercise eminent domain powers. Taking water rights, land, etc. This is being done with the full approval of what should be conservative/Republican legislatures. Very, very bad!

If I were a resident of any of these three states, I would be in contact with my state legislators and governor as being against this new entity unless 1) it was submitted to a vote of the people and 2) said vote must be approved by all three states.
The states need to have absolute authority over any taxation and imminent domain and not delegated to a non-elected, quasi government authority. So, I interpret this proposed entity strikes me as having the charter to enhance infrastructure for ports, industrial zones and transportation.
Existing infrastructure addressing this include the river waterways, ex. Mississippi, Cumberland, Tenn-Tom, Arkansas rivers, all navigable. In particular, the Tenn-Tom and Arkansas waterways are underutilized and I am not familiar with the Cumberland. Existing state and fed authorities are in place to implement new ports.
Road transportation capacity for transportation generally ranges from simply overloaded to it sucks due to substantial deterioration. The Mississippi River in particular is a bottle neck for road and probably rail transport. More bridges are needed and existing bridges are too often substandard.
Quick reactions here. YMMV. Thanks for posting this OP.
At least it’s limited to the “greater Memphis region” however expansive that is.
Government hacks, no matter what level, cannot help themselves. Nothing but lies and sleight of hand to expand government control. And the people continue to elect them. Insane.
If the state of Mississippi won’t agree to annex Memphis the deal is a total no-go for Tennessee.
“Smart” is definitely code for p&^ing on you and telling you it is raining.
LOL - Good one!
It’s just amazing to me that I had never heard of this before, & you know that area is just the start. They’ll push this out into every state. Why on earth are R’s falling in line with it?!
