State Wants to Ease Gas Price Pain (California)

SNIP

Gas prices per gallon are getting higher across the U.S., but prices in California are soaring higher than any other state according to the American Automobile Association. Yesterday, the average price of gas in California was $5.69 — up from $4.68 a month ago — while the national average was $4.32.

Much of what has driven up gas prices over the past several months is outside of California lawmakers’ control: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the sanctions that followed, have spiked prices, combined with the fact that demand for oil has ramped up from pandemic lows faster than supply.

California’s gas prices tend to be higher than other states in part because of higher taxes for infrastructure and environmental fees. State lawmakers raised the gas tax by 12 cents after a fraught battle in 2017 to pay for roads, bridges, transit projects, and more. Then there’s some amount of higher gas prices in California that’s harder to account for, which Severin Borentein, an energy economist at UC Berkeley, has dubbed the Mystery Gasoline Surcharge.

SNIP

Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom made a modest proposal in January, before Russia invaded Ukraine: Pause the increase for one year. In other words, don’t let the tax go up by 3 cents this year. The Newsom administration described it as an effort “to potentially lower the price of gasoline” and provide some relief to consumers.

The proposal is so small that “it’s not going to have an effect that anyone will notice,” said Borenstein, the Berkeley economist. Drivers probably wouldn’t notice, but people managing state infrastructure budgets probably would: The plan would cost the state about $523 million in lost revenue. That would mostly wind up affecting funding for state highway projects in a couple of years, according to analysis from the Legislative Analyst’sOffice.

That’s of course a lie.

It was policies enacted by Brandon Cartel.

Putin had nothing to do with the massive inflation CREATED by Biden, Congress and the Money Changers.

If Governor Dipstick believed in half of what he spews out daily, he would Immediately MANDATE ALL Public Employee’s Statewide utilize ONLY Mass Public Transit or Electric Vehicles for ALL Travel to and from Work. Immediate Termination and Loss of Pension and Retirement Benefits for ANYONE violating this dictate.

I had no idea Russia invaded Ukraine several months ago.

The gas tax is closer to $0.51 per gallon. The difference is the costly gasoline blend California (and no other state) uses. That brings up the difference to $1.18.

It is essentially a hidden tax that no one notices until they go to another state.

They already make around 2 billion a year from their severance taxes on oil and gas, plus 9.7 billion a year on gas taxes. That’s not counting all liquid fuels or natural gas.
This doesn’t take in consideration Royalties from state land.

Texas charges 6% severance
California charges 9.5%

Nice little racket they have going on.

This is from a real commie rag. It took them 5 paragraphs to mention the ridiculously high California gas tax. Then they blathered on about how if they lower the tax just a little maybe the oil companies wouldn’t pas along the savings. Then they worried that since rich people use more energy, they’d be benefiting more than regular folks, maybe just send a check that way lawmakers could pick and choose who they want to help.

Commies are just plain stupid.

Pause the increase for one year.

This is complete BS. He's not cutting anything. He's stopping a planned increase.

Why doesn't he & the other 49 governors & the Brandon STOP the state & Federal gas tax. If they can declare an "emergency" to lock us up, close our businesses & force experimental serum into our arms, they can declare an emergency to suspend the state & fed gas tax.

Full Stop.
