Free stuff for the homeless doesn't work out the way Oakland's 'tiny houses' advocates thought it would

Seems the idea of "free homes" for the homeless, touted as a panacea to end the problem, isn't quite working out the way its advocates said it would.

In Oakland, at a concentrated community of "tiny homes," given out by the city to the homeless, the result was this, according to The Oaklandside:

A fire Monday morning incinerated three tiny-home shelters at a city-run transitional-housing site at E. 12th Street and 2nd Avenue, across from Lake Merritt.

Nobody was injured, according to authorities, but five people who were living in the scorched shelters were displaced. A fourth tiny-home was damaged as well.

Oakland Fire Department Chief of Staff Michael J. Hunt said the cause of the fire, which began around 10 a.m., is under investigation. Twenty firefighters responded to the incident and got the fire under control by 10:30 a.m. Thick smoke from the blaze could be seen from downtown Oakland and neighborhoods around the lake.

Some do so by choice because they don’t want to be “in the system”.

I read the article and it’s the same old argument that was used by Ted Kennedy, and other activists at the time, back in the 60’s for the inner-city folks that couldn’t afford healthcare. The medical professionals would treat these folks at little to no cost, but Kennedy and others claimed it wasn’t the same level of care as the regular folks would get in the hospitals.

Now these activists are claiming that these tiny homes aren’t built to the same standards as regular homes and it’s jeopardizing their lives.

So they formed a collective of people who are in the position they are from making poor decisions, and let them make all the community decisions. And expected anything else?

They are living in a shed.
A yardbarn.
A shack.

I am sure there are rooms available at the Ritz Carton or Mandarin Oriental for $900/night.

To solve society’s problems, you need to have as many people as possible working as productively as possible for as long as possible. Then there’s money to take care of those who are UNABLE to take care of themselves.

Taking money from productive people and giving it to the indolent guarantees the indolent will become more indolent.

What is the difference between a tiny home and a trailer?

tiny homes i think aren’;t much bigger than a medium sized shed- they have a living/bedroom, maybe a loft, and a small area for the bathroom- some can be a bit bigger- with maybe separate bedroom-

Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes all the same
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
And the people in the houses
All went to the university
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same
And there’s doctors and lawyers
And business executives
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same
And the boys go into business
And marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same

Build them a nice camp in the desert, too far to walk to civilization. Exchange food and water for making license plates or something.

Why are they homeless in the first place?...hmmm...scratching head!

Drug users, alcoholics, the mentally ill, criminals and those simply unpleasant to be around often find themselves burning their last bridge.

In addition to that, there is also a romantic drifter character who imagines his life as one individual against the rest of the world, while moving through backroads and transient encampments.

That wistfulness can reflect the characters we have all heard of from history and ballads.

adventurer
drifter
excursionist
explorer
gadabout
globetrotter
gypsy
hiker
hitchhiker
hobo
journeyer
nomad
peddler
pilgrim
rambler
roamer
rover
trekker
vagabond
walker
wanderer
At the end of my enlistment I lived out of my car for three months while my wife and daughter lived with my in-laws so that I could bank the Separate Rations and Housing allotment for my possibly lean job hunting time.   All went fine until somebody ratted me out and the First Shirt made me move into the barracks for the last week.   Staff Sergeants are not supposed to be homeless vagabonds.

Well, larger homes are better for cooking meth:

I suspect they probably don’t have much in the way of 401Ks or stock options to liquidate for quick funds with which to purchase real estate.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They could have pawned their real silverware, jewelry and designer watches............ There’s always a way.
