Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday said Russia has already experienced a “strategic defeat” in its invasion of Ukraine.
“If you step back and look at this, this has already been a dramatic strategic setback for Russia, and I would say a strategic defeat,” Blinken told co-anchor Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked about additional sanctions the U.S. may impose on Russia.
Blinken said Russia has already failed in the three main goals it had at the start of its invasion of Ukraine.
“They had three aims going into this. One was to subjugate Ukraine to Russia’s will, to take away its sovereignty and independence. The second was to assert Russian power. The third was to divide the west and NATO. On all three fronts, its already lost,” Blinken said.
“Ukraine, its sovereignty and independence is gonna be there a lot longer than Vladimir Putin is gonna be on the scene, the Russian military has dramatically underperformed, its economy is reeling, and the west, NATO are more united than any time I can remember,” he added.
Blinken’s comments come as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is progressing through its fifth week. While Moscow has taken control of some cities, its efforts have stalled in a number of areas because of staunch Ukrainian opposition.
Ukraine’s forces regainned full control of the region around Kyiv on Sunday for the first time since Russia’s invasion of the country began in late February.

Tony’s lips were moving.
Of course it is - he read that in the papers which reprinted the stories he ordered them to print.
The fact that he can’t say “real” defeat (which is what the stories are inferring) gives the lie to this tale.
Or as Harry Reid would say: “It worked, didn’t it?”
Believing what this individual claims is much like
believing SloJo is the TOOTH FAIRY.
LOL! He is pathetic!
Everything is to placate the markets. That’s why the whole Ruble oil thing isn’t in any mainstream paper or media source.
Blinken, is no one who can give one shred of confidence!
Biden is wrong on everything, so Russia must be winning.
I like how this article on FR about Blinken claiming Russia has suffered a strategic defeat came right after the one claiming that Europe is now rationing fuel and food, and the USA isn’t far behind.
LOL! Propaganda is everywhere!
Claim the Russians lost and move on. Pretty sure that was the plan from the start no matter what happened.
The Hill…may as well be Media Matters.
What about Ukraine not joining NATO?
Wasn’t that a primary goal.
What about stopping Ukraine ability to strike civilians in the east?
By systemtatic destruction of Uke military that did not surrender.
Wasn’t that a primary goal?
Ukrainian bio labs….still in operation?
Ukraine statements about renuclearization…still a plan?
Blinken is a blinken fool and thinks his audiences believe him.
Blinky said this? Wow! He’s a bigger genius than that Messican guy, Beto O’Rourke.
I don’t think our government knows how much damage they did to themselves in the eyes of smaller countries, this is similar to when big tech censors true factual stories....we leave the platform and talk about it anyways.
I hope this is going to make crypto explode and hopefully a privacy crypto where the transactions can’t be traced.
I am surprised the Biden cheer squad here at FR aren’t pinging themselves and swarming the thread to laud this fool.
Blinkn can talk all he wants about what ‘he sees’ as Putins objectives....
Everyone knows we are basically prisoners to the information we have given to us - we also know the US, Eu and Ukraine are flooding the information battlefield with data that is projecting one image....and that’s favorable to Ukraine....
..... Whereas news networks, media and such from Russia or about Russia’s objectives on the ground has been banned or cut off in order to sustain the one sided Ukrain images we see daily.
I think the fact that the US nor Nato refuses to gurantee Ukraines security in the future speaks volumes.....and few if any other nations willing to step up. When in fact it’s reasonable to assume Ukraine needs to guarantee it’s own security....just as other nations outside Nato have to.
Blinken must project the story and frame it so Nato can still sustain it’s signifigance....as well the US via the information war. Blocking Russia data and such pretty much gives only one side to this conflict.
Blinken statements are what they want the world to think are Putins objectives when that just is not the case.
The US has also seen an even greater strategic defeat - self-inflicted by the likes of Blinken and Bidet.
If you set up goals that are far beyond Putin’s, then it was a defeat.
But if you look at what he has grabbed, it is a huge victory. Western Ukraine is now Russian — done, fait accomplait. And, the Russians are on the verge of complete control of the north coast of the Black Sea all the way to Crimea. A huge strategic gain for them. Plus, they now control the huge oil and gas fields on the north end of the Black Sea. Europe just got more dependent on Russian oil and gas.
Blinken is only making bizarre statements like this to make Biden look like a successful war president before the midterms.
Lavrov got a meeting with Modi.
Blinken the short-pants punk didn't.
