The soldier, who was stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, was participating in a training exercise in Eagle River, Anchorage, with a small group of other soldiers, according to a news release. Officials at the base did not say if any other trainees had sustained injuries.

What a horrible way to die. RIP, soldier.
Maybe we should arm our soldiers.
RIP.
Where’s Davy Crockett when you need him?
Why was he unarmed whilst in bear country??
Crockett died at the Alamo fighting for Texas.
What idiot sent them out in Alaska unarmed?
The same idiots who would not let me have a weapon while riding on a bus in Kuwait. It did not matter at the time that there was a war in Iraq and that we could have been targeted by terrorists. Only one person was allowed to have one magazine to defend the whole bus.
Do we know they were unarmed? Maybe the poodle-shooter (.223) wasn't enough gun to stop a charging black bear?
Most of the guides carry things like the .45-70, .450 Marlin, .338 Winchester, .375 H&H, or big bore handguns like the .454 Casul and .480 and .500 S&W Mags. For grizzly I'd feel marginal with a .44 Mag.
Of course the best choice would be your namesake: THE DESERT RINO 50 BMG -- sadly I can't find a picture of it on the internet. Weird.
I’m still in Alaska, however, now I’m armed when in the woods. My #1 fear when in the Army here was running into a bear or moose because no, you can’t be armed with real bullets when conducting training.
“Maybe we should arm our soldiers.”
No longer possible, since we’ve sent everything to Ukraine.
Jimmy Cox, a soldier at Elmendorf-Richardson was the shooter.
Could be he was just coming from Trixies outside Ovando?
“Crockett died at the Alamo fighting for Texas.”
Yes, but prior to that he had killed a bear.
I don’t even know how I know this, or even if it is true, but that is said of Davey Crockett, king of the wild frontier.
I dont think it was a bear. Same BS local news that sometimes says “jogger was killed by a pack of wild dogs”.
They’re easily found under “RHINO” although I agree that Mittens could only stop a bear attack by running less quickly than the intended victim.
Flying into Anchorage on the 28th and will be in Denali for 8 days. Was planning on checking my 45ACP and bringing that with, now I'm thinking I'm gonna need something much, much bigger because I hear bear mace doesn't really work ...

Landfill ??? That would seem to be an open invitation to bears.
