Ben Logan inviting public comment on possible armed response team (Ohio)

In the wake of school violence around the country, Benjamin Logan Schools is examining measures to increase school security, including an option allowed under the recently enacted House Bill 99 that enables boards of educations to choose to have an armed presence in school buildings if certain procedures and requirements are met.

Board members tabled at their regular rescheduled Thursday evening meeting a resolution to consider a volunteer response team in the district.

Instead, the board has called a special meeting for 6 p.m. Wednesday,July 6, at the Benjamin Logan High School auditorium, inviting district residents to attend and provide public comment regarding the possibility of implementing an armed response team in the schools.

Superintendent John Scheu said at the special meeting, there will be a sign up sheet for anyone who would like to speak on the issue.

“Everyone is in agreement that parents should not have to worry about their child coming home safe at the end of the school day. There are different views as how best to make sure this happens,” he said.

“Those individuals who want to address the school board on this topic will have a maximum of 5 minutes to talk, and must sign in on a provided notepad if desiring to speak. Everyone will be expected to be civil and respectful of different opinions.

“Again, we all want the same result — safe schools.”The district has been consulting with Logan County Sheriff’s Office on this potential measure, and school resource officer Deputy Matt Robinson and Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds were in attendance at Thursday’s meeting. At the end of the meeting, members also convened in executive session for the purpose of discussing security measures.

Scheu noted that a number of schools in Shelby County have already implemented an armed response team, consisting of trained staff and administrators.

House Bill 99 was signed into law in mid June by Gov. Mike DeWine after it passed both the House and the Senate. The law now allows Ohio schools to arm teachers or individuals who undergo a minimum of 24 hours of training.

Each member of a school defense team would be required to meet the minimum training and have yearly criminal background checks.

Further information about the district’s armed response team proposal are included on Benjamin Logan’s Facebook page as well.

Don’t fund public schools via State Federal level sources.
Local funding and local control.

Within the State are red districts and blue districts. Cleveland and Akron city school boards have already decided to deny teachers the right to be armed.

“...a volunteer response team in the district.”

This will open up a can of worms. If the people “volunteering” are not legit, and/or they are members of organizations like ANTIFA or violence led groups, then they are at that point talking about uncontrolled vigilantes or killers being informed of where they can wander outside the law. This is going to get some people, to include innocents, killed or critically wounded because the “attack dogs” can’t be controlled. And what do you do about the parent going into a school to get a person who shot his/her son/daughter? It moves from a preventative action group to a mob real quick.

A number of years ago, a close friend was the vice principal of a middle school in Warren, Michigan. Not only was he carrying a concealed weapon, but so were numerous male teachers in the school.

I'm not sure if it was after the state created Gun Free Zones on school property or not. But whatever, he was armed as were several other teachers.

“That worked out really well in Uvalde.”

Exactly. So let’s have another special unit cause it’s gonna be so much better than the cops and the SWAT team and the school police. Yessir! High speed, low drag, special operators. Oh and don’t forget 5’2” Officer Barbie who REALLY wants to be on the team.

Get all the teachers and staff certified and permitted. In Constitutional Carry states publicly announce that all teachers and staff are permitted to carry concealed. All teachers do not have to be armed in class. The knowledge that some will be and that the would-be shooter does not know who is sufficient. In my county that is done and schools have signs by the doors to that effect. No-one going for spectacular suicide will choose a location where he might be killed before he can kill a bunch.

For sure. There should be no federal funding of any schools from k to post grad. Federal money comes with federal requirements in all facets of schooling, not just what the particular grant is for.

"You already have an armed response team they’re called police.

Police are a "post-mortem" solution...

These people are talking about actually protecting their children...
Not getting help to clean up the bodies, fill out reports, and consume doughnuts & coffee...

...I think that like most BIG problems there are a multiplicity of ways to handle the problem of school mass shootings.

But, seriously, since Democrats don’t want anybody but criminals to have guns, pass a law that no democrat can own a gun. Now, this would not be a panacea but since democrats historically committ most of these mass shootings there seems no question that mass school shootings would occur dramatically less often.
