Half of G.O.P. Voters Ready to Leave Trump Behind, Poll Finds
NYTimes ^ | 07/12/2022

Posted on 07/12/2022 6:24:19 AM PDT by devane617

As Donald J. Trump weighs whether to open an unusually early White House campaign, a New York Times/Siena College poll shows that his post-presidential quest to consolidate his support within the Republican Party has instead left him weakened, with nearly half the party’s primary voters seeking someone different for president in 2024 and a significant number vowing to abandon him if he wins the nomination.

By focusing on political payback inside his party instead of tending to wounds opened by his alarming attempts to cling to power after his 2020 defeat, Mr. Trump appears to have only deepened fault lines among Republicans during his yearlong revenge tour. A clear majority of primary voters under 35 years old, 64 percent, as well as 65 percent of those with at least a college degree — a leading indicator of political preferences inside the donor class — told pollsters they would vote against Mr. Trump in a presidential primary.

Mr. Trump’s conduct on Jan. 6, 2021, appears to have contributed to the decline in his standing, including among a small but important segment of Republicans who could form the base of his opposition in a potential primary contest. While 75 percent of primary voters said Mr. Trump was “just exercising his right to contest the election,” nearly one in five said he “went so far that he threatened American democracy.”

No, FR is not a good barometer, except for Trump’s base. The great majority of us are old folks, and there is much stronger support for Trump here than out there in the real world.

And now that FR has turned into Conspiracy Central where every little thing that happens is a “false flag” or “Reichstag fire”, every mass shooting was orchestrated by the FBI/CIA via “MK-ULRA mind control”, we are treated to multiple Daily Expose articles claiming the vaccines contain tiny razor blades, itty bitty mechanical octopuses, magnetic nanobots, wiggly wormy little parasites, King Cobra snake venom, etc., and Ashli Babbitt isn’t really dead — she was a “crisis actor” (and so were the EMTs), the blood was fake, etc. — I fear for the Republic if FR is a good barometer.

That said, I voted for him twice and will vote for him again if he is the nominee.

How so?

I voted for Trump. Desantis is a Trump with a better bedside manner.

He will allude to running ... “again” ... cough cough .....

But he was elected, so technically, legally he can’t run again.

One almost needs to smoke weed or drink a half bottle of Jack Daniels to digest that.

And I don’t do weed.

A lame attempt of the NY Slimes to equivocate on the fact that only 26% of Democrats (that’s right DEMOCRATS!) want Dementia Joe to run again.

“Part of the appeal of Trump (at least for me, but I’m sure I speak for many) is that he FOUGHT.”

What things did he fight about that mattered to the country and made a difference? Not a snotty question, I’m curious which items you would cite.

You could say “Supreme Court” picks, but every President who gets the chance puts his person on the Court. It’s minimal job description stuff. (And Mitch did the yeoman’s work to help make it happen.)

It’s the constant fighting over inconsequential and/or personal level things that I would posit didn’t serve much of any purpose and that much of the voting public grew weary of. TV provides enough entertainment for most.

I do not doubt that pollsters sometimes put their thumbs on the scales to influence opinions, but I’m not sure what the reason would be in this case. The media is clearly trying to tell Biden to skip re-election, but giving him an excuse to run again like polling ahead of Trump would be counterproductive to that effort if they were truly fudging those numbers.

I like Trump, DeSantis, and Rand Paul. Anyone of those three at the top of the ticket is alright by me.

The Democrats cannot run Biden again. Kamala's hated by everyone on both sides of the aisle. Don't bring up Michelle, that's just goofy and Hillary's just a rich bag lady at this point.

Seriously, who are the Democrats going to run? Stacy Abrams? Pete Buttigieg? That lady who has one joke and eats salad with a comb? They have absolutely nobody who can run as a serious candidate. Maybe they'll try to rehabilitate Andy Cuomo. Or go balls-out for nuttiness and run the Gillam/Avanatti ticket.

You aint kidding!

Dont forget 90% are going to die, starvation is now occuring... This place is a nuthouse, albeit entertaining. DU looks rational at times in comparison.

nearly one in five said he “went so far that he threatened American democracy.”

NEARLY one in five? What does that tell you? It tells me the 24/7 media blitz of a stacked congressional committee has peaked at maybe 17% who actually think 3 am ballot drops, secret counts and the like were legitimate but a few hours of protesting that got out of hand weren't.

Yes, a significant number of GOP voters will abandon Trump, as they did in 2016 and 2020.

Trump was elected by white Democrats in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

He’s not a Republican, never has been, never will be. He’s something different.

Something different is what we need.

Desantis is a Trump with a better bedside manner.

America doesn't need someone with a "better bedside manner"

We had that with GWB and look what it got us.

America needs a bare-knuckle fighter willing to do what it takes to win.

DeSantis is still too green. He needs to be VP where he can get the tutelage of being under the GOAT President.

In the meantime Rep candidates beg for his endorsement and a chance to appear with him at his MAGA-rallies. No Rep can attract crowds and donations like Trump.

Trump won big in 2020, a stolen election. He received more votes than any sitting President in history and the most ever by a Rep, by a lot. Trump resurrected and expanded the GOP. He started a movement. Why would you ditch the leader of your movement? NYT gaslighting in the hope that they can stop Trump. Two phony impeachments, the Russia hoax, the sham Mueller investigation, and the J6 committee have one objective, stop Trump from running again in 2024.

Corrupt News by the Times; with projected possible World Famine, World Depression, American Economic Collapse all brought on by the Dems, Soros guiding Biden leaving The American Conservative Voter turning their backs on Trump; hard to accept. The Dems sold out the USA by shutting down domestic oil production and giving the Russians a profitable ride to 1 billions dollars per day to wage war on the Ukraine by giving them the exclusive oil supply line to Europe and still turning their backs on Trump,,,that is hard to believe.. When Trump left office the USA was in a stellar economic position and the Dems through it all away and still support Joe, something is very wrong if they really are turning their backs on Trump.

McConnell probably buys NYT a sandwich, and “wahlah!”... a poll is born.... to match the desired outcome.

Ask no questions, share, rinse and repeat = hampster wheel.

This is combat. Things can’t be routinely mopped and swallowed whole.

FR is a good barometer and there is nothing but support for him here.

Because those who aren't fully on-board the Trump Train have been zotted (mostly during the campaign of 2015-2016), or labeled "Never Trumpers". That's the main reason why Freep-a-thons are never-ending.

Free Republic represents the 35% that are all-MAGA.

Trumps ergo is his own worst enemy. He turns people off who would otherwise support him. If he wasnt such an ass he would have handily won re-election.

We can count on the MSM doing all they can to troll Trump and fling incendiary devices at him. He will respond in kind. Their stratagem is so obviously to invoke and inflame his ego and ensure he either runs and gains the nomination, which gives them a recipe for demonizing the Republicans. Or, that the party is fractured in internecine warfare. A Win-Win outcome.

So easy to outfox them. Would require our DJT to rise above and anoint a solid successor, Pompeo, DeSantis, etc.

We’d need someone to attack and defeat the invidious MSM and its allies. And not get all giddy and squishy-soft once they’re in the Big Boys Club in Washington.

I’m not optimistic.
