A new book shows that Woodward and Bernstein lied. And lied. And lied.
I was a child of the Watergate generation. Vacationing at a lake house the summer I was 17, I spent weeks glued to the committee hearings on TV. Back in school that fall, I wrote a paper arguing that Nixon should resist pressure to resign. Headed south the next August, I watched Nixon’s resignation speech at a motor lodge on I-95 and the next day, on the highway, listened on the car radio as Gerald R. Ford declared “our long national nightmare” over.
And then there was the book All the President’s Men by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two Washington Post reporters who’d supposedly brought Nixon down. When it came out in 1974, I read it avidly. And two years later I was enthralled by the movie version, written by William Goldman and directed by Alan J. Pakula.
But there was one thing - in the book and the movie - that always puzzled me.
I’ll describe it as it’s presented in the film. Woodward (Robert Redford) meets late at night in a parking garage with his secret source, known as Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), who drops a bombshell. The Watergate cover-up, he says, wasn’t really about the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex. Its actual purpose was to protect a whole raft of covert operations that involved “the entire U.S. intelligence community - the FBI, CIA, Justice.”

Watergate, the first coup d’état in the United States and the precurser to the second, the 2020 election.
Of course they lied. They wrote their own story where they were the Heroes.
It was riddled with factual errors.

In the case of Watergate, their goal was to get rid of President Nixon so the North Vietnamese would finally win the Vietnam War. They knew that the NVA would never win while he was still in office.
The Left's victory was the framework for all of their lies and assaults against every Republican president from them on.
“Watergate, the first coup d’état in the United States and the precurser to the second, the 2020 election.”
Hardly the first. The 1960 election was a worse scam than even 2022.
On Amazon, A great read THE WATERGATE AMENDMRNT, by John Fitzgerald. An amazing story of using 25th amendment to set up America’s first successful coup.
The problem with the article is that G. Gordon Liddy was more of a Nixon White House guy than a CIA man. His presence at the break-in suggests that it wasn't just a CIA operation.
1960 was bad but IMO not as bad as 2020 as it involved two states only. Nixon should have won that one going away but media presence did him in and with the help apparently of the Mafia in Chicago. 2020 was a national conspiracy and complete media involvement.
The Media's complete leftist apparatus is now the power behind the dems in all political matters. Notice their push for abortion and fag national laws now and gun control and globull warming. Hear much counter?? I notice almost all of the letters to the editor in a local newspaper here, a 75% GOP area, are only about those issues these days. All parroting the dem line fed to them by the media.
To listen to the media till last week, one would think The Bidet was the current day Churchill.
Lastly be careful when listening to their message. Their GOP sweepout of the Congress message is designed to let us rest. As bad as The Bidet is, they are buying voters and bringing in a wave of supporters from outside the country while the Media is playing 3 card monte by staying away from things negative to the dems. In 66 Johnson was not popular but the dems still held onto the house by a lot albeit losing 40+ seats. The only thing that will remove the dems and Media from DC power is 5MT.
Hardly the first. The 1960 election was a worse scam than even 2022.
You sure got that right! It was not the first! The list is long and includes not only the successful takedown of Nixon but many others like taking out JFK and the massive attempt to take out Trump. The Trump project was harder than they ever expected. The only way they could make that one work was to "jigger" the elections.
Anybody who can't see this over time is either stupid or part of the "other side."
I always thought it was a CIA Operation, with the coordination of the Justice Dept. and FBI. Just like today. The difference between Nixon and Trump was that Trump fought back and didn’t play the game as the CIA determined it to be. He confronted the Fake Media onslaught. The media has always been complicit and a tool of Government (left-leaning elements, that is). That is why the first impeachment failed.
According to “Silent Coup,” John Dean was responsible for the break-in to get the black book that listed his fiance as a call girl for the DNC.
Trump did not fight back. All his enemies are still alive and breathing. Hs didn’t lay a hand on them
And for what it's worth, it's never been verified that Valerie Plame was indeed once a "covert" CIA agent, that was strictly her claim.
Interesting. I may get the dumbed down version of the events by O’Connor. One thing the article left out was something a FReeper (whose name I have forgotten) posted here several weeks ago. He said that Dean was interested in the list of prostitutes because his wife’s (Dean’s) name was on the list. The author said Dean had a special interest in the list. I wonder if it is in relation to Dean’s wife?

That claim was being made at the time of the Watergate Hearings.
I was, also, glued to the TV. And cried when Nixon resigned. I worked for Nixon in the Kennedy election, the only Republican in a Democratic Catholic girls’ school in Chicago.
So true, the news media, Hollywood, and academia have been cinched by the left for over a half a century now. They started on Trump as a hardcore racist the moment he came down the escalator and declared illegal immigration was a problem that needed addressed because of the effects it had on law abiding citizens and immigrants.
Excellent article.
G. Gordon Liddy is dead now so he can’t review this book, but he’d probably approve. In his day, he said the only book about Watergate that was accurate was “Silent Coup”.
