Ukraine may have captured a Russian general in what would be the highest-ranking of Moscow's officers to be taken prisoner since the Second World War.
Video published Wednesday revealed a group of Russian POWs detained by Ukraine amid a surprise counter-attack near the city of Kharkiv, among them a man wearing the uniform of a mid-ranking Lieutenant-Colonel.
But Ukrainian media now claims the man is 'likely' to be Andrei Sychevoi, who is actually a high-ranking Lieutenant-General and commander of Russia's Group of Forces West.

Nice hat.
“a man wearing the uniform of a mid-ranking Lieutenant-Colonel.”
I wonder if he did something to anger one of Putin’s lackeys and was demoted, sent to front lines, and dispatched on what was meant to be a suicide mission.
If so he could have some interesting things to say.
Check out the ears. Before fingerprinting, ear shapes were used for ID.
Demoted?
Or Russia couldn’t afford a General’s camo uniform?
Or he was wearing a colonel’s uniform in hopes of not being recognized as a general by Ukraine?
There is something very strange about this “war”. Constantly feels like a media production, rather than a violent conflict. Similar to how it felt during COVID - bodies should have been everywhere, but weren’t.
Why (in the US Army and USAF and Marines) is a Lt. General higher than a Major General when a Major (0-4) is higher than a Second Lieutenant (0-1) and a First Lieutenant (0-2)?
Answer: A Lieutenant General is ranked higher than a Major General because the name for major general came from the term ‘’sergeant major.’’ A sergeant major refers to an enlisted rank in the army, which is below even a lieutenant (the lowest officer rank). Because a lieutenant outranks a sergeant major, the lieutenant general is ranked above major general.
He’s what they call a privy general. Promoted for the duration of the war and relegated to cleaning toilets. (Just kidding ... Russians don’t have toilets!)
Great comment—the western propaganda is so thick and heavy, along with the name calling—that we may never know what is actually happening over there.
I trust no media reports or “experts” on this conflict.

Then how do you formulate an opinion?
And yes, even paranoids can have real enemies.
I am totally comfortable with-holding judgement until the propaganda has ended.
The “name calling” (that we see in the mass media and here) is usually a clue that a lot of lying is going on...
Pictures and video of dead people are being censored by most of the media.
And remember, paranoia is just a heightened state of awareness...
And also a slight chin dimple. Perhaps they are putting top officers in lower level uniforms to reduce sniper deaths?
I am totally comfortable with-holding judgement until the propaganda has ended.

By their silence you will know them ...
Ah yes, more name-calling (by implication).
FR has really gone down hill in the past year or so.
There is enough information that one can pick up a feel for what is happening, for instance, this new exuberance and confidence from the Ukrainians indicate that the reports of these forward movements and gains are real and happening.
The atmosphere from the Russians seems to be the reaction we would expect if the Ukrainian positivity was justified.
Like you, I skip over many if not most of the details and specific claims and firm numbers and such, but I do look for enough information to pass through my reading that I get a gut feeling for things.
Read what you can, listen to differing opinions and counter takes, and listen to your instincts.
I still remember the grossly fat guy that was supposed to be a General when he was just a security guard.
The First of many to come—the whole of the Russian army will be surrendering too. Planes flying to Ukraine to land and surrender—whole ships will sail into Odessa to surrender to Ukraine. VICTORY! Nothing can stop Ukraine! A new Europe is being made in Ukraine! Next to seize Russian Black Sea coast and Moldavia! Then take Belarus! Russia can’t use Nukes—they fear America leveling them—their Atomic Weapons are valueless to them. They dare Not use Poison Gas out of fear of killing civilians—that will mean a Nuke First Strike by the USA.
