Deal averting railroad strike has potential to fall apart

The White House-brokered agreement to avert a railroad strike has the potential to fall apart, threatening widespread economic disruption right before the midterm elections.

Rail workers are set to vote on the tentative deal reached between unions and railroads Thursday morning. If any of the 12 rail unions fail to ratify a new contract, nearly 125,000 rail workers could be headed for a strike.

The agreement would mandate two-person crews, cap health care costs and allow workers to take time off for medical appointments or other scheduled events without being penalized, all key concessions won by unions.

The deal also provides 24 percent raises over five years, back pay and cash bonuses, similar terms to those offered by the White House-appointed presidential emergency board (PEB) last month.

One Union has already rejected the so-called settlement. The non-political industry press is saying - too close to call, but likely will fail with the rank and file. Just too much built up animosity against the management types.

Hope you have your pantry stocked and the bicycle tuned up....

Naturally. It’s a very well established FACT that anything that Biden touches turns to fecal matter in record time.

I don’t have much faith in the White House or the Unions but it is imperative that a rail strike is averted.

I'm convinced that everything the biden crime boss does is designed to kill, castrate and nullify America.

I've been patient waiting for this November . . . but there's an unexplained anxiety building up I'd like not to have.

Senate Democrats just blocked our bill that would have given railway workers a big raise and prevented a crippling strike and supply chain crisis.

If a strike occurs and paralyzes food, fertilizer, and energy shipments nationwide, it will be because Democrats blocked this bill”.

The unions likely wouldn’t but the members who are voting might well. As post #3 states there is a lot of animosity between the rail workers and management and it goes back well over a century.

Whatever you do Joe, don’t send Kamala to fix it!
She is a rabblerousing divider, not a unifier.
I think sometimes Ms Harris forgets her job description.
She is no longer just another Socialist Babe marching arm in arm down University Ave. in Berkeley. Ca. protesting Trader Joe’s hiring process.

A good friend of mine is a railroad worker who is in one of these workers

In his shop the consensus is Fuck Joe Biden, of course they have a few whackanoodles who think Joe Biden is the best thing since sliced bread but they are an extreme minority.

However union leadership in DC are 100% dumbocRats and don’t want a strike because it would ruin the midterms more for the rats. So the leadership is pushing for a yes vote on this contract.

However when the contract was up during the Trump administration, the same leadership was pushing for strike because the leadership wanted to make Trump look bad. However, nobody wanted a strike

The union has been preparing for the strike since June

Only certain people would get that raise, everyone else would get less

It is not across the board

Having been insulted, obstructed, spit on and sabotaged by the UAW for 15 years I’m no union lover, but Christ on a crutch, was management expecting one man alone to operate those trains? OSHA would have been throwing a conniption fit if I’d tried that in a auto plant!

The unions likely wouldn’t but the members who are voting might well. As post #3 states there is a lot of animosity between the rail workers and management and it goes back well over a century.

The money is great but it comes at a cost to the workers. They just won the right to take an unpaid sick day without receiving a disciplinary punishment penalty. Taking an upaid day off to attend a family funeral will result in a penalty. The railroads are imposing such severe practices because they shed 25-30% of their labor force, including conductors and engineers, the past several years. This gave them great profits on Wall Street, but resulted in harsh attendance rules to keep trains running.

Still remaining is being on call 24/7 every day up to a month at a time with expectation to report 90 to 120 minutes after notification. As most freights are unscheduled until they finish making up the train, actual departure times are not known in advance. Add to that, one or more crews expected to man the train may lay off meaning your time is sooner. Likewise, due to delays in your train arriving late from its departure point, you are rested and ready to go but hours pass before it actually arrives for you to replace the expiring crew.

This uncertainty takes a toll on many individuals leading to no family life and dependence on alcohol or drugs. To continue this way in todays environment for 20 years or longer to retirement leads to severe depression, mental illness or worse. Again, if the work boards were properly staffed, schedules would provide for some relief with there being enough workers available to man the trains without the just-in-time calling of workers just off duty and having met the minimum Federal rest requirement time.
