Jewish university suspends all student clubs after court orders approval of LGBT group: Yeshiva University told students in an email that it would "hold off on all undergraduate club activities" following SCOTUS decision

An Orthodox Jewish university has suspended all student club activities following the U.S. Supreme Court's reversal of a temporary order sparing the institution from having to approve the establishment of an on-campus LGBT organization while its case is adjudicated.

Yeshiva University told students in an email Friday that it would "hold off on all undergraduate club activities while it immediately takes steps to follow the roadmap provided by the U.S. Supreme Court to protect YU's religious freedom."

A spokesperson for Yeshiva University told The Christian Post in a Monday statement that the institution filed briefs on Friday, as instructed by the Supreme Court.

"We anticipate a quick conclusion in the courts and the start of clubs soon," the spokesperson wrote.

Katie Rosenfeld, the attorney representing YU Pride Alliance, called the university's suspension of all club activities a "shameful tactic" in a statement published by CNN.

The attorney argued that the Pride Alliance only seeks a "safe space" on campus.

"The YU administration's announcement today that it will cancel all student club activities rather than accept one LGBTQ peer support group on campus is a throwback to 50 years ago when the city of Jackson, Mississippi closed all public swimming pools rather than comply with court orders to desegregate," she said.

Last week, the Supreme Court left in place a New York state court ruling in a 5-4 vote, lifting Justice Sonia Sotomayor's temporary order preventing Yeshiva University from having to give the Pride Alliance group the same privileges as other student organizations under the New York City Human Rights Law.

The law includes sexual orientation and gender identity among classes protected from discrimination in places of public accommodation.

The nation's high court determined it was too early to take up the university's case and that it must go through the lower courts first. The court ruled that Yeshiva could return if lower courts did not offer a quick resolution.

The opinion was unsigned, but the justices who sided with the majority were Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

"The application for stay pending appeal of a permanent injunction entered by the New York trial court, presented to JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR and by her referred to the Court, is denied without prejudice to applicants again seeking relief from this Court if, upon properly seeking expedited review and interim relief from the New York courts, applicants receive neither," the order states.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote the dissent opinion, joined by Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett. They contend that Yeshiva University's right to religious freedom should exempt them from having to recognize the LGBT group.

"The First Amendment guarantees the right to the free exercise of religion, and if that provision means anything, it prohibits a State from enforcing its own preferred interpretation of Holy Scripture," Alito wrote.

The conservative justice wrote that New York denied the school this right, calling it "disappointing that a majority of this Court refuses to provide relief."

The case began last year after Pride Alliance filed a lawsuit against the school. In June, the New York State Supreme Court ruled that Yeshiva University must recognize YU Pride Alliance as a formal student organization.

New York Supreme Court First Judicial District Judge Lynn Kotler wrote that the school serves more as an "educational corporation" than a "religious corporation."

The judge's order "permanently" restrains university leaders "from continuing their refusal to officially recognize the YU Pride Alliance as a student organization because of the members' sexual orientation or gender and/or YU Pride Alliance's status, mission, and/or activities on behalf of LGBTQ students."

Well, that’s the equality they demanded.

Mission accomplished!

Yeshiva University, a Modern Orthodox institution, will cave. They can’t help themselves. YU proudly allowed the camel’s nose into the tent.

Usually, the only time federal law applies to clubs or sports teams at a private university is when that university accepts federal funding.

Anyone know if Yeshiva is spending USA tax dollars?

What the hell ever happened to “FREEDOM OF RELIGION?” I guess our guaranteed freedoms no longer exist since we are now being run by a “Pedo dictator” better known as Joe Biden.

YU knowingly allowed homosexuals to enroll and allowed them to organize on YU property.

Some YU grad schools already have recognized LGBTQRST clubs:

RE: YU knowingly allowed homosexuals to enroll

OK, how would they know if an applicant is of the LGBT persuasion? I that in the application form?

It is an Orthodox institution. Have you ever heard the expression ‘Jewish geography’? It’s not like a Big 10 school. The background of students are very well known.

RE: Anyone know if Yeshiva is spending USA tax dollars?

I would say the answer is YES.

See here:

https://www.jta.org/2022/09/15/ny/report-highlights-new-york-jewish-federations-role-in-steering-funding-to-hasidic-yeshivas

Excerpt:

UJA-Federation of New York is the largest single donor to The Jewish Education Project, which received $4.3 million from UJA-New York last year. The JEP offers assistance to Jewish schools, including Hasidic yeshivas in Brooklyn, in accessing government grants for “professional development, student support, and educational materials,” according to its website.

Such public funding is under a spotlight this week after the New York Times published an investigative article saying Hasidic yeshivas continue to receive public funds despite failing to offer secular educations equivalent to those in non-private schools, per state law.

The only Schools I know that REFUSE to accept government money are Hillsdale and Grove City College ( and maybe a few others ) but those two are the most prominent.

Grove City College originally accepted government aid but withdrew over 50 years ago over a dispute regarding Female Athletics programs under TITLE IX. They were prescient in this regards seeing how Transgenders are now allowed into female sports.

the school serves more as an "educational corporation" [rather] than a "religious corporation."

Uh-huh. Then I read this: ". . . recognize the YU Pride Alliance as a student organization because of the members' sexual orientation or gender."

So, they admit that the YU Pride Alliance is is not actually a student organization--dealing with something related to study--but a sodomy-marketing organization.

I think it can safely be argued that "YU Pride" has more to do with breaking commandments against Pride and Sodomy, and might preferably be banished and arrested.

“Anyone know if Yeshiva is spending USA tax dollars?”

I believe if you allow students to get federally-backed student loans, you fall under the statue.

To my knowledge, the only accredited college to be exempt is Hillsdale College, and Obama did his best, and Biden is doing his best, to shut it down.

As is US News and various “ranking” organizations that attack Hillsdale for refusing to discriminate against whites, Asians, and Jews (of any color).

They should do what Democrats do, just ignore judges and laws they don’t like.

I cannot imagine why the plaintiff, some lesbian named Amitai (Tai) Miller, enrolled at Yeshiva University in the first place, unless it was specifically to set up the college for this type of thing. Just like the 2 gay men who specifically targeted a bakery known to be run by religious conservatives to bake them a “wedding” cake, this piece of deviant feces attended YU to open a wedge for deviancy and perversion to spread. YU is well known to be a religious college geared to Orthodox Jews and their lifestyle; homosexuality is an abomination to Judaism. You cannot expect a college run according to Jewish law to allow its premises to house a club devoted to perversion forbidden by Jewish law. Miss Miller had her pick of any one of thousands of colleges, yet she chose this one. I wouldn’t be surprised if some gay group offered to pay her tuition if she did this, so intent are these perverts to spread their filthy lifestyle. I feel sorry that the other 99% of YU’s students are now denied the ability to have clubs, a wonderful part of the college experience, because of the selfishness of a couple of perverts and the moral failure of our not-so-Supreme Court.

It’s actually a local law that is the issue here, not federal law. The New York “human rights” ordinance is stricter than the similar federal non-discrimination laws, which is usually the case with big leftist jurisdictions.

Leave some tickets to a Broadway musical laying around the waiting room and see who snatches them?
