Air Force grounds most of its C-130H cargo planes due to cracks in propeller barrels

The Air Force is unable to fly 116 of its 128 C-130H cargo planes due to issues with how the propellers on the craft were assembled, Air Mobility Command confirmed Friday.

The 116 affected planes, which consist of the C-130H model and variants, were initially grounded Tuesday. Inspections continue to figure out which of those aircraft have defective propeller barrels.

“[The] propeller barrels in question had been installed in 100 C-130Hs, as well as the entire inventories of eight MC-130H Combat Talons, seven EC-130H Compass Calls, and one TC-130H,” according to Defense News.

Air Mobility Command told Defense News that the issue was uncovered by a maintenance crew. While running a test on a plane that had recently undergone maintenance, they found that the propeller was persistently leaky.

I used to fly on those planes when I was in the Marines in the early 1980s. And they were old planes back then!

While I agree the crew that caught it should be commended.
Someone needs to look into how 116 out of 128 could be bad and they are just now being caught. How was it not caught when 10 were bad or just 5?

We’ve got at least 12 different types of Cargo planes, so I don’t see weapon deliveries to Ukraine impacted.

I don’t even see C-130H in the list. Are they included under C-133?

May just be fatigue after being in service too long.
It does not say how old these parts were.
Could be a part that was not regularly replaced nor usually checked for metal fatigue, and now has to be.

They’re not saying 116 are bad, but from the same design or batch as the small number found failing. Grounding those 116 till inspected/tested. Reasonable move.

Maybe none were “bad” prior.
Old planes, maybe they just found another bit that now needs to be added to the checklist.

According to A-DSB there are only 5 up (with transponders on) in the world, at the moment.

I’ve taken off in C-130s about a hundred times. Landed in them maybe 3-4 times.

This sounds as if perhaps same issue Navy had with P3 40 plus years ago. Prop dome was developing cracks routing fluid to opposite side of pitch as required (same engine, same prop). A call for increase pitch would get routed to decrease pitch- making matters worse—and vice versa. Cracks in prop dome created big problems.
