Eight dollars for a gallon of gas. Once, it seemed like an impossibility; now, it seems to happen in California every time there is a price spike. Last week, a Chevron station in Los Angeles recorded prices of $8.35 and above; similar prices were reported at multiple stations around Southern California

Severin Borenstein, a professor of business and public policy at the University of California at Berkeley… The state's low carbon fuels standard, for example, adds $0.08 to every gallon of gas. California gas taxes add another $0.17. But Borenstein's data shows that, all told, California-specific taxes and regulations only account for around $0.83.

Borenstein is either ignorant or a liar or both.

California gas tax

$0.51 State Excise Tax

$0.18 Federal Excise Tax

$0.22 Low Carbon Fuel Standard

$0.25 Cap-and-Trade

$0.12 State & Local Sales Tax

$0.02State Underground storage tax

Total $1.30 per gallon

Here in Illinois it’s illegal for a gas station to post all the taxes on a gallon of gas.

How can the sales tax on $8/gal. gas be just $0.12?

I am in an expensive area, and I haven’t seen $7 gas. I think it was $5.89 when I bought yesterday.

I paid as much as $6.19 when the price peaked a few months ago. It dropped to as low as $4.77, but the last price I paid is $6.19.

The only stations that charge as much as $8 are stations near airports and stations that make most of their money off repairing cars.

This was reason #5 why we bailed out of CA.

Just for the basics, it's very expensive just to live there..Let alone doing anything, go anywhere or buying anything.

Maybe not so dumb. State of California employee making half a million per year. I guess the high cost of gas is not affecting him too much

They’ll blame the refiners, of course, and they’re partly right, as the refiners are having to buy ‘carbon credits’, and they are afraid to point that out...and hence the extra $2 to $3 per gallon.

...but then again, it’s what most of the people there want, since most were ‘educated’ there.

Great post. But my answer to the mystery is that the mystery is why Californians keep voting D again and again followed by complaining?

Special California Blends = ?

Adds another $0.67 per gallon to the cost of gasoline. It could be more now. No other state uses it and CA cannot bring bring in gasoline from another state.

Soon they shall be recording gasoline prices on a per-ounce basis. That way, it doesn’t look quite so bad.
