Biden administration proposing phaseout of compact fluorescent light bulbs

A proposed Department of Energy rule would phase out the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to remove less energy-efficient bulbs from the market.

Current standards require light bulbs to be at least 45 lumens, the unit used to measure brightness, per watt. Under the proposed update, first reported by CNN, the standard would be more than doubled to more than 120 lumens per watt. Commonplace 60-watt equivalent lightbulbs would only require a maximum of 6.5 watts, according to an analysis by the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP).

“Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of more than 110 energy efficiency actions taken by the Administration to help lower energy costs and keep money in the pockets of American families while reducing our nation’s carbon footprint,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a statement.

Standards aimed at phasing out incandescent bulbs in general were first passed by Congress during the Bush administration and put into practice during the Obama administration. However, in 2019 the Trump administration unwound the rule. The Biden administration resumed implementation of the rule, finalizing it in April.

Who the hell even buys CFL’s? They were a crap solution forced on the buying public in the first place... I can’t imagine these horrible things sell worth a damn now that LED’s are out there.

I don’t use them nor do I care-—but why is government (once again) involved in every aspect of our lives? Let the free market shake this out——

Well, it was the stupid government that forced CFD’s into our lives. Environmental hazards AND more expensive than incandescents. So the stupid government has finally discovered the stupidity of CFD’s.

Exactly.

They will phase themselves out without any “help” from the government.

CFLs don't even work in real cold weather (like 0 degrees Fahrenheit).

Do they still sell CFLs? Why would anyone buy them over an LED? I'll admit that we still have some in use at our house, but that's only because I'm too lazy to change them out before they die. But they take time to warm up to full output, whereas LEDs are 100% from the start.

Hopefully they'll continue the exemptions for specialty bulbs, otherwise someone is going to try to put an LED in their oven light socket, and find a nasty surprise the first time they use the oven...

No CFLs here but I have one LED light in the laundry room that came with the house. It’s horrible, flickers constantly.

Remember when you took your burned out bulbs to the electric company and they gave you new ones for free?

Can you even buy them now? That was one of the fastest product life cycles ever. LED blew them out of the water in about 5 years.
