NASA chief says China could claim the moon as its own territory if it beats the US to the lunar surface

The head of NASA has said that China could claim the moon as its own territory if beats the US in the race to the lunar surface.

In an interview with Politico, published Sunday, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said Chinese military expansion in the South China Sea was an indicator of what might happen on the moon.

Nelson said: "It is a fact: we're in a space race. And it is true that we better watch out that they don't get to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research. And it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they say, 'Keep out, we're here, this is our territory.'

"If you doubt that, look at what they did with the Spratly Islands."

George Lucas’ Death Star is almost certainly patterned from long-held stories about the moon. Much has been made of its apparent hollowness and capacity to ring.

Just stop with the idiotic juvenile conspiracy theory crap already. A couple of billion dollars was spent on Apollo; tens of thousands of people worked on it, but NONE of them will admit to the "hoax"... because it wasn't a hoax.

The Russians were thoroughly embarrassed by Apollo and would have been all over the slightest hint of fraud like white on rice, but they could point their dishes at the moon and hear clearly what was happening.

Professional movie cameramen are on record saying that the movie tech DID NOT EXIST in 1969 to fake the pictures and video, and in some cases it would be impossible to fake TODAY without CGI.

Just stop already. FR would be a much better place without the conspiracy theory cr@p.

Good luck with that. Space is worthless and expensive.

Worthless, except for comm sats, weather sats, military recon sats, GPS sats, and so on.

Face it, the U.S. government itself just admitted we never went to the moon. Why else would china beat us to the moon?.

Considering the incredible amount of hardware and fuel it takes just to launch a very small payload to the moon, I wouldn’t bet on anyone militarizing the moon anytime soon. Even if it was just for surveillance, the optical physics make spying on Earth from the moon useless. Same reason no Earth-based telescope can even come close to resolving objects on the moon the size of the Apollo landers. And trying to launch weapons from the moon, even if you could get them up there in any significant quantity, would be silly. They would have to be missiles, and would take several days to reach the Earth, whereupon they would first have to achieve orbit to begin a controlled descent into the atmosphere without burning up. The folks at NORAD would have all the time in the world to detect them.

“ Nope, the Russians landed remote controlled rovers on the moon. Astronaut-wise, yes.”

I wasn’t aware of that or had forgotten. Thanks.

As for the treaty, it seems no one who went there or might possibly has actually signed it.

But, I always thought it was agreed no country would claim it, yes.

"We landed them here but we did not keep them there and we folded operations."

The moon is lacking in amenities, but that may change.

We already landed men on the moon...It’s ours...

If China decides to go there and build on it, how will we stop them?

Thanks to the free traitors, they would be doing it with our money anyway.

Well I guess they had better get Space X going.

Anything to do with SpaceX is a non-starter - Musk must be the most hated man by the feds, even topping Trump.

US endeavors will have to wait for Bezos’ Blue Horizons to come on line - decades from now.

No, it is a young NASA who admits he doesn't know anything.

I would encourage you to carefully look at this link:

“Only nation ever that has gone to the Moon.”

And I know one of those who walked and rode in the rover on the surface of the moon. My wife was friend of his mother, she [volunteered] worked for him in his re-election campaign for the US Senate, which he lost.

[The “Republic of China” is Taiwan, not the mainland, which calls itself the “Peoples Republic of China”.]

Since the mainland China did not sign the treaty and are therefore not in control of anything concerning the lawful decision of 134 countries that did, then trying to take control of a celestial body is like coming into the US and trying to take over a state.

The People’s Republic of China was not recognized by the UN until 1971 when the UN expelled the Republic of China and transferred China’s seat to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). In addition to the ad tempus recognition of the ROC by a majority of countries before UN Resolution 2758, the ROC lost its membership in all intergovernmental organizations related to the UN. As the UN and related organizations like the International Court of Justice are the most common venues for effective execution of international law and serve as the international community for sovereign states, a majority of the countries aligned with the West in the Cold War terminated diplomatic relations with the ROC and opened diplomatic relations with the PRC. So the PRC was established as the recognized government of their own replacing the ROC 51 years ago.

In 1971, the UN stated in their United Nations Treaty Collection, under China, Note 1,

” Considering that the restoration of the lawful rights of the People’s Republic of China is essential both for the protection of the Charter of the United Nations and for the cause that the United Nations must serve under the Charter,

” Recognizing that the representatives of the Government of the People’s Republic of China are the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations and that the People’s Republic of China is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council,

” Decides to restore all its rights to the People’s Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations related to it.”

On 29 September 1972, a communication was received by the Secretary-General from the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China stating:

“With regard to the multilateral treaties signed, ratified or acceded to by the defunct Chinese government before the establishment of the Government of the People’s Republic of China, my Government will examine their contents before making a decision in the light of the circumstances as to whether or not they should be recognized.”

“With respect to any other treaty not listed in the Annexes to this Note, to which the People’s Republic of China is or will become a party, in the event that it is decided to apply such treaty to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Government of the People’s Republic of China will carry out separately the formalities for such application. For the avoidance of doubt, no separate formalities will need to be carried out by the Government of the People’s Republic of China with respect to treaties which fall within in the category of foreign affairs or defense or which, owing to their nature and provisions, must apply to the entire territory of a State.”

In other words, they accepted the treaty they are now throwing out for their and Russia’s needs, 50+ years after they approved it with the above declaration.
