BART director John McPartland was censured by his peers Thursday for using the phrase "cotton-picking" at a board of directors meeting earlier this month.
McPartland made the remark while expressing his approval of a racial equity plan presented by Black staff members, a group that included Maceo Wiggins, the director of BART's Office of Civil Rights. "I find the work that Maceo is doing right now to be so cotton-picking inspirational," McPartland said.
McPartland did not respond to an SFGATE request for comment but told the San Francisco Standard weeks ago that he was ignorant of the connotations of the term with regard to African Americans and slavery.
“I plead ignorance, and I ended up having a talk with the deputy general manager, who gave me a quote out of a dictionary for [the term] that identified a degree of sensitivity for the African American community," he said. "I am sincerely sorry. I am acknowledging my ignorance and sincerely apologize."

This guy is a cotton-picking coward...
Is this the end of Yosemite Sam? Or Quick Draw McGraw and Baba Looey ?
Dag nab it, you can’t say cotton-picking any more. What in tarnation?
Reminds me of the time a Metro DC bureaucrat used the term “niggardly.”
Well, what Hillary said was ok, because she’s a good Democrat.
Ditto, Joe Biden telling a black group that Republicans would put them back in chains.
The rule is, good Democrat politicians never are held to the same standards as others.
Then there’s that KKK Senator. Friggin’ unbelievable that he got to be a Senator.
Don’t apologize. You still get fired.
Well that's not true. It even defies logic. No overseer would go down the endless hot rows of cotton just to whip someone for stretching for a second. A slave might have been whipped for not reaching the quota at the end of the day.
Oh wait, as snarky as you usually are, it must have been hyperbole. /sigh
My dad’s entire family picked cotton. Virtue signaling has got to end.
So stupid
Okies, Texans and people in the Central Valley were cotton pickers and they weren’t oppressed minorities
However, had he used the Ebonics form: "I find the work that Maceo is doing right now to be so mutha fuckin' inspirational," all would be well.
I love this revisionist history you provide. It’s mighty interesting. Glad they only whipped if they didn’t provide daily allotment. So much better for them. Good god they should not have been forced to pick one dang cotton ball at all!!!!! And you are reminding us that it wasn’t bad unless they didn’t do enough everyday? Are you evil?
the one thing they fear is people who stand up to them.
That and the TRUTH.
Well, I never picked cotton.
But my mother did, my brother did and my sister did. But my daddy died young...working in a coal mine.
damn so calling a spade and spade is a no no too
Interesting. What a mess.
Not much the woke don’t over react to the wimps never did anything of worth in their life but expects the right to tell others how to live.
