If you get a new car with the self-driving or "lane assist" stuff, disable it immediately.

The crashes are caused by electron exchanges by Siri and that Australian fellow

The self-driving feature doesn't invoke the EV owner in me, it kicks in the soon to be retired software engineer in me. I really have trouble trusting driving with a computer. At best the computer could do warnings (i.e. beeping if you're veering out of lane), but not automatically steer for you. I posted on an EV forum I frequent why I disabled it immediately after buying an EV.

And by the way, Tesla is an anacronym for Too Expensive Still Liberals Adore.

Humans think they’re so smart.

So smart that they think they can copy many of the things that it takes a human brain to do, and then put it into ‘smart things’, which then turn out not to be so smart.

So, which one failed? The human or the ‘smart thing’?

Thanks

And then there’s this:

“Tesla will deliver an over-the-air software update to cars to address the issues, the recall notice said.”

One of about 20 things that turn me off about EVs.....if they can do that...they can control if you can drive it at all.....they being big brother.

Yes.

Good answer, and the right one.

One is the reflection of the other. Neither ended up being smart enough.

Unfortunately, that's a feature common new cars in general, not just EV's. For example, the law with the "kill switch" for new cars didn't state it was just EV's.

Does Tesla simply remote turn off all of these cars? Since they ahve the apparent capability, if they let the cars drive, do they have liability for the result?

New Vehicle Safety Report Reveals Teslas Using Autopilot Are 10x Safer January 12, 2023

“We are proud of Autopilot’s performance and its impact on reducing traffic collisions,” the company states with a January 2023 Vehicle Safety Report update. The numbers are staggering. In the 3rd quarter, one crash was recorded for every 6.26 million miles driven using Autopilot. Teslas not using Autopilot technology logged one crash for every 1.71 million miles driven.

"For comparison, the NHTSA estimated one automobile crash every 652,000 miles. That equates to Tesla drivers without Autopilot engaged being 2.5 times safer and with Autopilot being used ten times safer than the national average.

Just because there is a recall for a discovered defect, doesn't mean Tesla's are less safe. Human drivers have a lot of defects.

It boggles my mind how much people trust software explicitly. Us code jockeys make mistakes too. Real life doesn't happen automatically so perfectly, even with the past 4 decades of seeming to start a system up so easily.
