Snow, graupel fall on Los Angeles and Disneyland during California storm

Hail, light snow and graupel have reached areas across the southern counties, including Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Diego and Riverside.

Most winters, the rest of the country might be envious of the weather conditions in Southern California — where locals enjoy Christmas with perfect weather and the misery of shoveling snow is nonexistent for city dwellers. But this year, even Angelenos are not immune to snow, as white patches surround the Hollywood sign and graupel reaches the Happiest Place on Earth.

“Right now we have really cold low pressure moving over Southern California ... bringing these scattered showers needs a very low snow level to the area,” a meteorologist at the National Weather Service told SFGATE.

That is the first time I have ever encountered the word “graupel.” I have a feeling that it will not be the last.

It’s just unfortunate that this weather pattern is happening at the height of the attention of climate change. God is in charge. But he seems to be playing into the hands of the liberals. I wish he’d stop.

Climate Change is something we all have to graupel with.

I’m here just to find out WTH “graupel” is.

I’m sure it’s something horrific brought on by the reanimation of Godzilla brought about by the horrors of gas stoves that possibly certainly are causing climate change.

Am I right??

Gaupel must come from bomb cyclones and polar vortexes having babies. Just wait til the ARkstorms hit! Then we will be talking Megagaupel!

I have always prided myself on having a decent vocabulary, but I am with you, I had no idea what that was.

“Graupel”. Soon to be added to the dictonary of “Climate Change”, “Polar Vortex”, and a host of others.

I love language. Words have meaning. And sometimes, though there are many different words that can somewhat describe a single thing, often, there is only one word that describes it perfectly. When writing, using that one word is gratifying, though as I get older, sometimes I have to hunt around in my head for that word.

I do not like it when there is a perfectly good, well understood word that is superseded by a new word in culture that is intentionally meant to carry emotional or ideological baggage.

I dislike it as much as someone who uses specific words to try to convey just how intelligent they want you to believe they are.

Hahahahahahahaahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!

"...the horrors of gas stoves..."

That absolutely made me grin as I look out the window on this gray morning with a mix of rain and soft sleet falling from the sky!

In other words, I am enjoying the grappling with the words and concepts on Free Republic as a way of avoiding graupeling with the disconsolate weather outside!

I guess the term ‘sleet’ was too male-centric.

I’ll bet Olivia looked up a synonym for sleet while writing the article.

Perhaps Olivia is AI, not real, and hasn’t quite got a good handle yet on local diction.

Remember back when there were cold fronts? Now, it’s a “blast of cold air” to emphasize it’s temporary nature. That’s one they have worked in over the past decade with great success.

I'm with you on that point. My favorite quote by Mark Twain has always been, "Don't use a five-dollar word when a fifty-cent word will do."
