Probably depends on your elevation. It’s a lot more common at higher elevations. We didn’t get it in upstate New York; we get it frequently in North Idaho.

Of course, there’s always the chance it is a product of climate change and it never existed before.

Maybe it’s a regional word. It is widely known in eastern Washington and North Idaho. Probably western Montana, too. Probably like “soda” vs. “pop.” But it IS a different form than sleet, hail, or snow.

I “hear” you, loud and clear!
Words DO “mean things”, and that’s why I CRINGE every time I hear someone on TV use the word “democratic” in conjunction with what a member of the Democrat party does or says.
They are NOT “democratic”—but “autocratic”, and even Communistic!
Plus, have you EVER heard someone on TV use the word “republicanic” to describe the words or actions of a member of the Republican party?

“Graupel”?

I saw some last week on the other side of the country and thought it was sleet.

I still remember learning about rain, snow, hail, and sleet in grade school and wondering when I was going to see some hail or sleet.

I guess I’m still waiting for that sleet.

My favorite quote by Mark Twain has always been, "Don't use a five-dollar word when a fifty-cent word will do."

Never use a long word when a diminutive one will suffice.

OMG! I took a swig from a styrofoam cup of brown spit one time. Scarred me for life! Heh, probably belonged to Chief Muddy Waters!

I grew up in upstate NY...loved whatever snow we got as kids. Different story when we got older and had to drive to/from work. Moved to the “left coast” in the late ‘50’s and had to drive to the mountains to see snow.

Yes...I just finished reading the three volume work on the Pacific War by Ian Toll, and it compelled me to watch “The Pacific” series again, then I had to watch “Saving Private Ryan” again.

I am kind of visual in this respect.

I found it interesting to watch “Saving Private Ryan” again.

Absolutely...your post is spot on!

I think it is related to why you never hear them call hard core Leftists “Left Wing” but always use “Right Wing” for conservatives.

All part of the plan!

This is exactly the second time I have seen the word, both pertaining to storms this season.

That’s my story, too. Grew up in Ithaca, Utica and Syracuse suburbs and loved winters with snowball fights, backyard hockey rinks, sledding, snowball fights. Then, when I got bigger, Dad expected his strapping young son to do all the snow shoveling. Ugh.

I stopped in Missouri for seven years, then lit out for California. Then, five years ago, we bought a summer home in North Idaho where it is cold, dark and snowy during the winter. My wife loves that (so she says) and doesn’t want to leave Idaho, but I’m back at our Bay Area place with sunshine and 60ish temps today.

“That is the first time I have ever encountered the word “graupel.” I have a feeling that it will not be the last.”

I saw it last week, and recognized it as the latest “trendy” weather word. The last being “bomb cyclone”. I googled it, and I got two hundred sites all within the previous three or four days, all treating it as a brand new word that no one ever used before, and telling you it was a brand new word (except to experts, of course) that you suddenly “needed to know.”

It’s amazing how these trendy weather words which may have existed in obscurity are suddenly used everywhere at once, all within a day or two.

That was my second thought about “graupel”.

It’s interesting how few here on this post have heard the word. It’s commonplace in North Idaho. I’ll have to ask more people if they have heard of it and know what it means.
