Trump vs. DeSantis: A Shadow Presidential Contest Revs Up and Heads to Iowa

Former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis dug in this weekend for what is expected to be a bitter and personal race between the two for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.

Mr. Trump revved up supporters Saturday at the Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington—an event Mr. DeSantis skipped—while the governor appeared before Republican groups in Texas and gave a speech Sunday afternoon at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. The two will then descend on Iowa, which holds the first GOP nominating contest.

Mr. Trump has already launched his campaign; Mr. DeSantis, the front-runner among the rest of the field, is expected to formally enter the race after the Florida legislative session ends in May. Mr. Trump already has some opponents, including Nikki Haley, the former United Nations ambassador in his administration. Several others are expected to join the race.

“We’re leading every Republican by massive numbers,” Mr. Trump said Saturday at CPAC, a conservative gathering where the former president continues to enjoy support from Make America Great Again acolytes. “Our getting back in the White House is their worst nightmare—but is our country’s only hope…if we don’t get back, this country can’t take it.”

Mr. Trump easily won the CPAC presidential contenders straw poll released Saturday with 62% of the event’s attendees compared with 20% for Mr. DeSantis and others well below that, according to organizers.

Mr. DeSantis’s speech Sunday afternoon at the Reagan Library was his highest-profile recent trip out of Florida.

“When the world went mad, when common sense suddenly became an uncommon virtue, Florida stood as a refuge of sanity,” Mr. DeSantis said Sunday, boasting how the state has seen a rush of new residents fleeing states with higher taxes.

On Friday, he will travel to Iowa..

On Friday, he (Mr. DeSantis) will travel to Iowa, with stops in Davenport and Des Moines for chats about his recently released book.

Three days later, Mr. Trump is scheduled to give a speech in Davenport about education policy—a topic Mr. DeSantis has helped push to the forefront of the GOP agenda—marking his first visit to the state since he announced his campaign.

A national Emerson College poll released last week of Republican primary voters had Mr. Trump 30 points ahead of Mr. DeSantis

The only ones calling it a “contest” is the fake media. DeSantis said he is not running.

Anything to cloud Trump’s candidacy

DeSantis said he is not running.

On Tuesday he was asked point blank on Clay and Buck and wouldn’t answer if he was going to run. And hasn’t answered countless other times. He IS running or he is flailing around and doesn’t know if he is in or out.

Clay and Buck, what a mistake to have chosen those two as Rush’s replacements. Cannot listen to them, their voices were not made for radio,

Why would the race be bitter? That term sounds like Biden Baloney gaslighting. The only ones who would turn a DeSantis v. Trump contest into a bitter one are those who are trying to make it easy for Biden to cakewalk to re-election.

If ever we needed a strong President, it is now.. biden and company have so weakened our place in world leadership, no country fears the US right now.

We need the man who did and the man who will again, put the fear of our strength and our resolve to stand against any thought of trying to take on this great United States!

As for DeSantis, I value honesty and I value loyalty... period! You take on a good man who we need... you are not loyal to this country. You are young and you have years ahead. Trump was removed via lies and with the help of the media and all of government.. why? He is the good one and they are corrupt from beginning to end.. they want to keep their control the way they have with biden. It’s wrong and it’s illegal... the corruption is in the courts also. The elite have come to the realization they can control and they can have it all. The people don’t count.. they don’t need your vote.. they can have it without our vote.. as they have done.
along comes Trump who upsets their corrupt apple cart. They have to get him out of the equation..
LOok folks... if we want our freedom... if we value the life our grandkids will have.. SOMEONE has to rid this country of those elite trash and get this country back to sanity and to God. A strong man old enough to have experienced the fight in life... is what we need... determined... unafraid... know what is aimed at him, and still serve with all his might.

Wow, why so beholden to this loose-cannon old man?

I still want to see why Desantis is “disloyal” to Trump?

And who really cares?

If you’re not the best choice, why this obsession with “loyalty”? How often did we mention this word before Trump? Does he deserve loyalty? Or is this just like a mafia don?

“The only ones who would turn a DeSantis v. Trump contest into a bitter one are those who are trying to make it easy for Biden to cakewalk to re-election.”

That would be former president Trump. To date, the only one making a bitter situation.

DeSantis can not confirm he is running UNLESS his sugar daddies tell him to run.

If you don’t think that loyalty is a good value when applied to a great man who was next to Reagan one of the most productive conservative Presidents we have ever had, than you are hopeless and lacking the ability to discern who would be best suited to run our Country at such a dangerous inflection point in American history. Luckily millions of MAGA voters will totally ignore your kind of ill informed input and put President Trump back in office.

You are saying not being loyal to one candidate is not being loyal to the country. Weak.
