I don't think most people know that, even today. I doubt that most people avoid saying "gypped" on the street. Maybe on social media, which is heavily policed by the mob.

Gypped is a word that is in wide use in the language. About .00001% of the people know that it comes from Gypsy. (Gypsy is another common word, like Eskimo, that no one told us has been added to the list of forbidden ethnic slurs.)
