Polish-Ukrainian friendship masks a bitter, bloody history

Poland has emerged as one Ukraine’s most ardent supporters during Russia’s invasion despite historical grievances between the neighboring nations that stir up bad feelings to this day.

“There are still open wounds in the memory of many people,” Duda said, an obvious reference to the massacres of some 100,000 Poles by Ukrainian nationalists during the 1940s. Poland considers the killings genocide.

The difficult past in Poland-Ukraine relations goes back even further than that. In a part of Europe where entire nations have disappeared from maps for generations before returning from the ashes of collapsed empires, sometimes at the expense of neighbors, Poles and Ukrainians share a history of existential rivalry.

Ukrainians, for example, harbor resentment from centuries spent under Polish rule, a period which is not remembered as completely benign.

Yes yes. East Europe. Tribalism and revenge for centuries old disputes. Let Europe deal with Europe.

Poland-Ukraine
Poland-Germany
Germany-France

They all used to hate each other. Then they all saw what happened if they don’t unite to keep out the Russians.

That sort of threat builds friendships very quickly.

The MERGING of what’s left of Ukraine with Poland, combined with the liberation of the Russian-speaking areas of Ukraine, pretty much means the end of what was Ukraine - and much better stability in that part of the world.

The UPA were very very bad, watch the movie “Wołyn”. But it’s not an easy watch to say the least.

Who says that’s what Poland wants? Now you’re just making it up. Typical Russian propaganda.

One would have to TOTALLY ASLEEP since WW2 to not know that Poland wants their land back.

Now remind me, what was the name of their leader?

Not a single Pole wants that. For the simple reason that if they get Lviv back then Germany gets Breslau returned.

Yep it opens up a huge can of worms, to say the least.

I just want Poles and Ukrainians to be good neighbors, each with their own country.

Nobody wants a repeat of the Second Polish Republic.

When the Russian’s caused the death of 6 million Poles in WWII, the violence between the Poles and Ukrainians doesn’t register very high on the list of atrocities.

Germany only gets what Poland decides to give them.

Zelensky has already ‘Merged’ Poland and Ukraine, so it’s just a matter of walking in.

Nice that you I know that I would state the OBVIOUS.

But ask yourself a question: Did I write that article, or did I even post it?

Well, if you think more empire building will bring stability, then by all means give all of Russia to China.

There have been two wars in Ukraine since 2014 that have caused some instability. Both were caused by Russia invading and supporting separatists.

“There have been two wars in Ukraine since 2014 that have caused some instability.”

Well, on the first one, Putin was a TOTAL IDIOT*, in that he believed what the West promised him.

He learned, so the ending here will be MUCH MORE STABLE.

*while I do get paid by Putin by the posting (like the rest of us anti-WW3 types), I’m not limited to what I say, as the Russians NOW have more freedom of speech than much of the West.

Meh. They had one bad episode when Bandera’s people massacred a lot of ethnic Poles in western Ukraine in WWII. In 1919 they fought together against the Red Army. The interwar Polish government screwed that up by trying to suppress Ukrainian in schools and at the University in Lwow. When I was in Lviv several years ago all the locals swore the accusations against the Banderites were Soviet propaganda.
