The GOP Can Save Itself if Trump Runs, Then Loses the Election
Yahoo News ^ | 4/14/23 | Matt Lewis

Recently, I’ve come to terms with the likelihood that Donald Trump will (gulp!) be the Republican presidential nominee, again. That’s right, it may only be April, but I’ve entered the “Jesus Take The Wheel” stage for the 2024 campaign.

Call it naive wishcasting, but until recently, I thought that Ron DeSantis might help us avoid this very situation. But the last month or so has not gone well. DeSantis’ rocky rollout (technically, he still hasn’t entered the race), coupled with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s indictment, have elevated Trump to clear frontrunner status.

Trump Wants to Turn His Most Toxic Baggage Into Primary Gold

While there are a million reasons to fear Trump winning the Republican nomination, I am comforting myself by the fact that there could be a silver lining: If the goal is to truly eradicate Trumpism, the most obvious method is for Trump to win the Republican nomination, and then (this part is important) he must be decisively defeated.

It has been observed that political parties do not change until they have endured multiple losses. If that is true of normal parties, it is doubly true of a MAGA movement headed by Donald Trump.

As a Never Trump conservative, I never wanted to have to come to grips with this scenario. I would love for someone to wrest control of the GOP from Trump, but it is looking increasingly unlikely that Republicans are capable of stopping Trump from once again winning their presidential nomination.

You RINOs are doomed. Your faction is decidedly the minority and has steadily been losing the power struggle for control over the Republican party - this despite y’all having the donor class and the vast majority of the money behind you AND holding the key leadership positions.

At least you’ll be able to come out of the closet and stop pretending. No longer will you have to pretend to be a real opposition. No longer will you have to go out and lie to the voters every few years before going back to the private club to hang out with your buddies the Democrat elites. You just won’t hold any of the levers of power anymore.

How is this guy a conservative? He says “DeSantis would be more dangerous than Trump, inasmuch as he is more a competent authoritarian.”

All you have to do is look at what has happened to Canada, Austrailia and New Zealand to see who the real authoritarians are. (The US and UK are not far behind.)

The fact that this guy Matt Lewis doesn’t recognize this disqualifies him as any kind of conservative.

However, I do appreiciate his reference to the Ricky Bobby Rule, “If you ain’t first you’re last”.

Matt Lewis is NOT a conservative; he pretends to be one so he could be the paid court jester on CNN. Once Biden was able to steal the election, CNN fired him, as they no longer needed a token “republican” or “conservative” of which in reality, Matt Lewis is neither.

Trump has a chance if the economy craters or if the Dems run Biden.

But I think they can keep the economy levitated for 19 months, and I think that Biden will be replaced, either through the primaries and convention or they’ll do an “Eagleton” and replace him after the convention.

The Senator Feinstein issue is a trial balloon on easing out the octogenarian and up dead wood.

What’s to stop the Democrats from stealing 2024 like they did 2020?

What exactly is a “mainstream” conservative, Matt? Sounds to me like that’s someone who only tinkers around the edges of the radical Democrat agenda. Want to ban “assault” weapons and make it nearly impossible to own a gun? No problem for “mainstream” conservatives. You’ll still be able to practice self defense with a bolt action rifle or revolver, after appropriate training and licensing of course. Want to kill babies in the womb? Again, no real issues for “mainstream” conservatives. Oh, they are personally opposed to abortion, just not willing to act on that opposition in any meaningful way. The list goes on and on. “Mainstream” conservatives, you see, aren’t the slightest bit conservative in reality.

Once Biden was able to steal the election...

Matt Lewis is almost certainly one of those that insist that the 2020 election was the "safest and most secure" in US history.

If Trump does not “win” in 2024, then the Titanic will have sunk beneath the waves.

His only stated “qualifications” was that he was a “Never Trumper”? That suggests that he really doesn’t support anything, but thinks we give a damn what he thinks.

Matt K. Lewis is an American conservative political writer, blogger, podcaster, and columnist for The Daily Beast, formerly with The Daily Caller, and has written for The Week. He has also appeared on CNN as a political commentator. Lewis was raised in Myersville, Maryland.

You certainly know some of these players for sure Cotton1706. Thanks for pointing that out. I would have assumed he was just another leftist blogger stating some fantasy. 🙂

I wonder if he departed ways or did The Daily Caller realize he was a phony, and they parted ways with him.

Here is his ‘vitae’: “Matt Lewis is an American broadcast journalist, author and political writer currently serving as a columnist for The Daily Beast. Previously, he worked as a political commentator for CNN News based in New York City. Lewis even wrote a number of columns and writings for The Week and contributed to the Townhall.com website.” He is married to a man and has 3 “kids”, and got kicked off of CNN because he did not lay down for Biden, even though he served as a designated Trump Hater for CNN. He is releasing a book called “Filthy Rich Politicians”, and claims his ‘rights’ as a so called intellectual.

“As a Never Trump conservative,”

Don’t believe him. The only sense in which he is conservative is to say that he is a false/faux/phony/fake/pretend conservative. He is not conservative. I was never impressed by George Will either. It turns out he was a phony all along.

Americans deserve honest elections. Americans deserve the peace and prosperity we had with Trump. For that matter, the world deserves the peace and prosperity that existed when Trump was President.
