Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and other mega-retailers have shuttered stores throughout the U.S. due to an overwhelming uptick in thefts.
As Breitbart News reported, reliable retail outlets have begun to make due on their pledge to close stores if crime continues to climb. Just last week, Walmart closed as many as four stores in crime-ridden Chicago.
“The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago,” Walmart said in a statement. “These stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years.”
As reporter John Nolte put it, left-wing cities and states have made shoplifting nearly legal by letting such criminals off with barely a slap on the wrist:

Maybe instead of closing stores in the ‘Inner Cities’, they need to open more and close those in small towns.

It’s funny you mention that because we just moved 20 miles from our last suburb and are officially rural.
It was a red county, red politics but the schools were still rotting, the retail sinking in quality etc.
You just can’t move far enough away from anything that has multi-family housing.

I have not seen that or an employee checking our receipts here in Benson, AZ, population 5,000 in the summer, 8,000-10,000 in Snowbird season.

They punish honesty by increasing prices to subsidize the losses due to theft. Meanwhile the thieves are getting tax breaks on all they steal and resell. You always get more of what is subsidized and less of what is punished. We are on a downward spiral where bad character is rewarded causing honest virtue to decline.
Self check out has not worked as hoped.

Demographics are similar in Prescott Valley. I have had only one person check my receipt because it was not bagged and the receipt was not visible.
The police in the area do arrest people for shoplifting and theft.
Many of these korporations, especially Walmart, insisted on being "social equalization centers" and located in such areas to take money from unwilling taxpayers via gibsmedats on "social programs".
They will move to greener pastures, and hunt there.
My guess: they were willing to absorb a certain level of loss for the purposes of virtue-signalling their concern for the community. But, in the last couple of years the losses have soared off the charts to a point where they can no longer afford to absorb the losses.
That has been the whole problem. A group of CEO's with the courage to put the blame squarely on the Democrat world view could have done much to stem the rot - instead they just let it happen to keep hysterical activists quiet.

I think the Democrat Party should form a corporation using their own money to provide grocery and drug stores to these areas.
