The shriveling of blue states accelerates
American Thinker ^ | 04/30/2023 | Monica Showalter

One of the most astonishing things about the mass flight from blue states is just how blase the ruling leftists are about it. There's no crisis, there's nothing to see here.

This, as they seek ever greater heights of national power.

The Wall Street Journal's editorial page has an excellent non-subscription piece on just how bad it's gotten:

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker shrugged last year after several high-profile corporations left his state. “Countless companies are choosing Illinois as their home,” Mr. Pritzker said. Then why does a new Internal Revenue Service report show an accelerating taxpayer exodus from Illinois and other high-tax states?

The IRS each spring publishes data on the movement of adjusted gross income (AGI) and taxpayers across state lines from year to year. Some Democratic Governors such as Mr. Pritzker claimed that the 2020 Census undercounted their state populations, but the IRS data shows blue states are losing taxpayers and income at an increasing clip. (See the nearby charts.)

Every year, it gets worse for these states on the revenue front:

The IRS data shows a net 105,000 people left Illinois in 2021, taking with them some $10.9 billion in AGI. That’s up from $8.5 billion in 2020 and $6 billion in 2019. New York’s income loss increased to $24.5 billion in 2021 from $19.5 billion in 2020 and $9 billion in 2019. California lost $29.1 billion in 2021, more than triple what it did in 2019.

No crisis, though, just a big, bellowed "F*** Elon Musk" from quintessential blue-state pol Lorena Gonzalez of California, back when the Tesla mogul threatened to leave the state in 2020 over the state's COVID lockdowns -- and he did. The hag was last seen being cuckolded by her pervy husband, who was ousted from his Board of Supervisors chairmanship

The plan is to turn the red states blue with blue-state escapees.

They don’t worry because their states will still be blue...

They all know it and don’t care. They figure that they just need to rig the elections better so that the federal government can subsidize them by passing massive bailouts, in effect taxing the prosperous red states.

That is their hope, at least. For a constant flood of “build back better.”

As a resident of a red state on the receiving end I can tell you that you are wrong.

I have no doubt that, whatever GDP growth there was in the last 6-9 months, all was due to the growing economies in the blue states.

But, democrats are not going to say that or admit it. They’ll allow Biden to claim credit for any growth at all, and give the credit to republicans for any problems that arise with the economy.

That job growth that Biden claims? The ‘12 million new jobs’? No doubt that most of them came from the red states, even if those jobs are the ones returning after the pandemic.

A couple of things:
1. The Blue States are not even attracting “low income” taxpayers. They are attracting no-income taxpayers, otherwise known as tax burdens. For example, one third of the homeless in the US reside in CA.
2. One of the reasons the BS pols do nothing about this is because the people fleeing tend to vote R. So each departure tends to make the state more and more blue. Politically, that is good for them, even if it’s bad fiscally. Since those in power will always have the best of everything, it’s really not a problem for them personally.

The blue states paradox: fewer people, more ballots.

Why should they care? They are gaining more bodies (and votes) through immigration and happily losing antagonistic older white voters who are far more likely to demand they do their jobs.

Mini-Brazils with big favelas are a progressive politician's dream.

Please elaborate since an on the ground viewpoint would be interesting to read. Thanks!

That is not happening here-at least not in the rural areas and small towns-that is where most of these escapees are going-they want to be in small cities/in the country because it is cheaper to live, everyone owns firearms and you can do as you please. The ones who don’t want to live this way are not accepted by neighbors-they don’t last here more than 1-2 years before they sell and move out...

You are assuming the escapees are all lefties. Good chance they are conservatives seeking more freedom. The exodus could end up strengthening the red states. If I were younger and had the money I’d flee the blue state I live in for Florida, Texas, or Arizona.

Have you chatted with some of the recent arrivals? If so, were you able to get a sense of their socio-political bents?
