AB InBev boss blames social media ‘misinformation’ for backlash against Bud Light
Financial Times ^ | 5/8/23 | Eri Sugiura

The chief executive of Anheuser-Busch InBev has blamed misinformation on social media for stoking a conservative consumer boycott of Bud Light after the best-selling US beer was promoted by a transgender influencer.

Bud Light has become the target of a fierce backlash since Dylan Mulvaney posted a video last month on Instagram, where she has 1.8mn followers, featuring a custom-made beer can provided by the brewery that was emblazoned with an image of her face.

The rightwing boycott has led sales volumes of the beer to drop by a quarter, while two Bud Light executives have taken leaves of absence.

Every week since April 1 and Bud Light's marketing decision fiasco, the company has trotted out another trial balloon suggesting that someone or some-group is to blame for their troubles.

They refuse to simply admit they made a serious mistake by not recognizing their consumer base. I don't think the latest is going to go over any better than the previous excuses.

This article is worthless with the paywall. There is no new news except for headline but the article doesn’t allow you to see what this social media misinformation is. What are they claiming is the misinformation???

There’s nothing that “misinformation” can’t do apparently

“The rightwing boycott”

One of the few times I’m glad a story is behind a pay wall.

There is no misinformation.

That’s just what authoritarian leftists call news they don’t like.

Can they get their spin straight, please?

First, circa March 23, 2023, listen to Ms Heinerscheid's own words focused on Bud Light's "more resonant and meaningful" Super Bowl commercial

25:11..."Yeah! I....I think number one...you know...I'm a businesswoman...I had a really clear job to do, when I took over Bud Light. And....it was...this brand is in decline, it's been in decline for a really long time. And if we do not attract...young drinkers, to come and drink this brand, there will be no future for Bud Light. So I had this super clear mandate. Like, we need to evolve and elevate, this incredibly iconic brand. And...my...what I brought to that, was a belief in...ok, what does "evolve and elevate" mean? It's means INCLUSIVTY. It means shifting the tone. It means having a campaign that's truly inclusive and feels lighter and brighter and different and appeals to women and to men. And representation is at sort of at the heart of evolution. You've got see people who reflect you, in the work. We had this hangover...I mean...Bud Light had been...kind of a brand of...fratty...kind of out of touch humor...and, it was REALLY important that we had, another approach.

Things blew up in early April.

Then they went radio silent for a week.

Then they supported the former marketing head.

Then Heinerscheid and her boss took a leave of absence.

Then the Clydesdales came back out of retirement in a commercial.

Then their US head sent a non-apology apology letter to the world.

Last week it was the fault of an outside agency.

Now it's "misinformation."

All that's missing now, is the Obama-like "I knew nothing until I saw it in CNN."

“The rightwing boycott”

I think Rational Wing boycott would be more correct.

Exactly. They are simple-minded and have no concept of how offensive the transgender system of non-conformity to common sense is hurting others. These people purposely deny and defy who and what women and men are. All of it is narcissism from the sickest mental disorder. God makes NO mistakes. These are fools who choose to do battle with the Creator of the Universe. I don’t want to even witness what their judgement will be.

The crux of the article:

“People often talk about this topic in social media like noise,” chief executive Michel Doukeris told the Financial Times. “You have one fact and every person puts an opinion behind the fact. And then the opinions start to be replicated fast on each and every comment. By the time that 10 or 20 people put a comment out there, the reality is no longer what the fact is, but is more [about] what the comments were.”

I guess he is saying social media posters made up the entire Mulvaney ad thing and it just got passed along much like the old “whisper” game from when we were kids.

Blaming someone or something for the problem you created just further alienates people from their brand and the others they sell.

I wonder if they see this rapid decline in sales continue, that they’ll try a “hail mary” and try to double down and call their own customers homophobes or trannyphobes to at least curry favor with the left but then realize they won’t drink this beer either. lol

There is no “misinformation”

Your company got in bed with a sicko…

A man who pantomimes being a woman on social media, largely to an audience of children and teens.. it’s despicable, and has yet to in any way actually take ownership of your actions.

When you say, you had no idea this happened, I do believe you.

When you say some low level person on contractor was responsible for having this can made, I believe you.

However you hired the nitwits who pushed this DEI insanity. You set up systems that let some low level person make such a stupid decision and execute on it without oversight and you continue to refuse to simply own it.

Someone signed off on making that can, I highly doubt it was the CEO.. but if it wasn’t someone high up in the marketing department… it should have been.

I guarantee if I was running a department and my department cost my company 25% of its sales due to any reason I wouldn’t be given a leave of absence I’d be flat out fired. As would 99.9999999% of the rest of the world.

Until you admit that while this man is free to live his life however he wants, that getting involved in any way with a man pantomiming being a woman mostly to an audience of teenagers and children was a horrible and wrong.. no matter how low the employee was who did it… until AB does that, they will continue to tank.

You can have a loud minority who doesn’t drink much of your product anyway as your enemy. Or you can have the vast majority of your consumer base write you off.

Simple decision, in a sane world, but we left the same world
long ago.

Financial Times has open and paid access articles.

I think they want $69/month for full access.

In 1982, I could buy a daily copy of the Washington Post for 25 cents. A subscription I think was about $10/month and the Wednesday and Sunday papers came with lots of coupons (of which a number were actually worthwhile).

And when that doesn’t work, they’ll really take the leftist view (lie) that these people boycotting are “like MAGA and are domestic terrorists”
