Left-Wing Reddit Announces Layoffs and Hiring Slowdown
Breitbart ^ | 06-07-2023 | Lucas Nolan

Reddit, the social media platform known for woke politics and leftist censorship, is laying off approximately five percent of its employees and slowing its hiring process according to recent reports.

The Wall Street Journal reports that leftist social media site Reddit, known for its extreme censorship of conservatives, is slowing its hiring process and laying off about five percent of its workforce. The action is part of a larger restructuring intended to improve operational efficiency and bring about financial stability.

“Reddit is making these moves to address priorities, including funding projects and achieving our goal of breaking even next year,” said Steve Huffman, the left-wing company’s CEO. The layoffs represent about five percent of Reddit’s workforce, which currently stands at around 2,000 people.

Reddit; The worst place for advice or technical help but the search engines keep giving me results pointing to that shithole every time that I am looking for hobby related stuff.

Reddit is a huge collection of individual subreddits (”subs) covering just about anything imaginable. Most of them are not political. I pick up interesting tidbits on hobbies and movies from time to time. If a search engine directed me there, I wouldn’t hesitate to look. It only takes a quick glance to see if the people in the discussion have anything to contribute. (And that can change day to day or hour to hour, depending on who shows up.)

On social, cultural and political subs, Reddit as a whole certainly leans left, but a lot depends on the moderators of a particular sub. The moderators are not reddit employees. I’ve never been interested in moderating a sub so I’ve never looked into the process, but I think you could start a sub of your own, name yourself as the moderator, and do whatever you wanted.

Somewhere in the background there are procedures for appealing moderators’ decisions, and there are probably some automated triggers that would draw attention from the higher level Reddit administrators, but in routine operation, most of the subs seem to be pretty much autonomous.

The problem, of course, is that a lot of the leftists are basically totalitarian and instinctively hostile to dissent. Some subs are notorious for banning dissenters. And once the leftists get a foothold, they start trying to take over. Other subs are much more open and some lean conservative. Depends on the mods.

Why bother with it? Well, it’s a matter of coming across a sub that deals with something of interest to you. It’s full of quirky little sites that sometimes have robust discussion of any number of arcane topics, some geeky and some not. Some subs remind me a bit of the way FR used to be years ago, when we regularly went sailing off on some amazing technical digressions with input from freepers with serious expertise.

“and bring about financial stability”

Maybe driving off half of your userbase wasn’t the best move to achieve that stability, eh?

“...I think you could start a sub of your own, name yourself as the moderator, and do whatever you wanted.”

Think again. It used to be that way, but hasn’t been for about 8 years now. The left is organized on reddit and actively seeks out subs that don’t toe their line. They will infiltrate those subs and then take them over and push the original mods out. They have refined this tactic to a science by now, and the actual mods of reddit are complicit and assist them.

Do you have any alternate site suggestions for hobbies?

One of my hobbies is Cuban cigars.

The Subreddit is the only place (that I could find) on the Internet where European and other foreign vendors are openly rated and discussed.

That is critical information when there are so many fakes out there.

Other cigar sites refuse to discuss it for fear of being sued or fear of attracting the attention of US Customs/law enforcement.

I was active on Reddit for a few years. I was banned from about 20 subreddits before they permanently banned me. Bunch of them long-haired hippie type pinko fags with commie flags tacked up on the wall inside their garages. They absolutely will not tolerate anyone who does not toe the party line.

I am aware that the lefties on Reddit are very aggressive, but how would they push out the original mods? Couldn’t the original mods just ban obvious troublemakers? And don’t the existing mods control who succeeds them as moderators when they are ready to pass the baton? (That, of course, is an area where one would have to be alert to lurking lefties who are looking to move in and subvert a sub.)

Yes, brigading is a problem. There are some comments that will instantly trigger an avalanche of downvotes. But if one doesn’t care about downvotes from leftist NPCs, that’s not a problem. Comments also are sometimes cross posted on multiple subs, and more than once I’ve stepped into a crossfire I was not expecting because I might search on X and get careless about which sub I was entering. If a topic is even remotely political, one needs to stay alert.

Lefties will also stalk people. The stories are legion about someone getting banned from a sub because someone had checked their posting history, found something they had posted on, say, r/conservative six months ago. Etc., etc., etc.

But r/conservative and r/prolife do exist, and I imagine there are many other right leaning subs. Someone probably has a sub that keeps a reference list of RightWorld or at least conservative friendly sites, cross-referenced by areas of interest. A couple of movie sites do this sort of thing and they can be very useful for movie related topics. I’ve not run across one for conservatives, but I’d not be surprised if it’s there.

I don’t go to Reddit for political and culture war discussions. I first went there chasing a couple of movie topics, and there are some terrific movie-related sites.

As with any website, newbies are well advised to lurk for awhile, or start with innocuous and non-political questions, and take the temperature of a sub first. Bomb throwing newbies are just asking for trouble. Situational awareness is always good.

Excellent example. I mostly go to Reddit for movie stuff. It can be useful for that.

“I am aware that the lefties on Reddit are very aggressive, but how would they push out the original mods?”

As I said, the actual mods of reddit are complicit with the lefties on the site who do this. So, for example, one strategy they use is to go onto the sub they want to take over and start flagging posts for rules violations. Then they can make the case to the reddit mods that that subs’ mods are failing to stop the violations, and the real reddit mods then force out the original mods of the subs and appoint new, compliant ones. That’s one way they have done it in the past.

That’s interesting. I’ve not encountered that, but I don’t spend much time on the political subs. And when I do stick my toe in, I always mind my manners, as I do on FR.

Has anyone set up a conservative version of Reddit? Here as elsewhere, I’m always interested in conservatives building our own institutions so that we can walk away from the Stalinists.

But again, this isn’t a problem that comes up on the movie subs. I suppose I’d be careful if I wanted to jump into a discussion on a film related to homosexuality, which I am sure Reddit regards as sacred. But since I’m not interested in those films anyhow, that’s not hard to avoid.

There ARE robust discussions about nudity and gratuitous sex in movies, and the pornhounds always show up to downvote those of us who think that actors should keep their clothes on. But the discussions are often lively, and the people who argue for modesty have by far the better arguments.
