Submarine on trip to explore Titanic wreck goes missing, "search and rescue operation" underway (tourists aboard)

A search and rescue mission was underway Monday morning for a submarine that went missing off the coast of southeast Canada on an expedition to explore the wreckage of the Titanic. Lt. Jordan Hart of the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston told CBS News that personnel were "currently undergoing a search and rescue operation" when asked about the rescue efforts off the coast of Newfoundland.

It is not clear how many people are on board the missing vessel.

OceanGate Expeditions, a company that deploys manned submersibles for deep sea expeditions, recently said on its website and social media feeds that an expedition to the wreckage of the HMS Titanic, which lies about 400 miles off Newfoundland's coast, was "underway."

OceanGate Expedition was not immediately available when contacted by CBS News to confirm that its vessel was the subject of the search and rescue operation, or that it was involved in any way.

Earlier this month, the company said on Twitter that it was using satellite company Starlink to help maintain communications with its expedition on the Titanic voyage.

So what happens to the human body at that depth if the sub hull was compromised?

Ive heard the bodies atomize, "explode" in a spark, look like a crushed coke can, etc. So what really happens? Will their be any remains found if the hull was breached?

“... the Titanic is under 12,500 feet of water.”

The Kursk was under 350 feet of water and lost with all hands.

Just a question of time until a Space Tourist rocket makes the same one way trip.

Yes, one of Bezos' penis-shaped Blue Veined Throbber rockets with the MEATUS-1 tourist capsule.

Why is the US Coast Guard doing the search and rescue 370 miles off Canada. This is not a US problem is it? I don’t mean to be rude about it but was the tour an American company, American crew, and did they go from an American port?

That I understand, but what was their plan for emergency, rely on Americans? Canada is 370 miles, the US likely 500 miles. This is likely and sadly recovery only.

Dying while on a tourism trip to the site of one of greatest maritime disasters has to be either ironic or karmic.

If they are on the bottom there is zero chance for rescue. It would take too long to even get another capable sub to them.

Once they get there, the only method of recovery would be to attach flotation devices. Not a chance they could transfer passengers.

They should have just gone to the museum and look at the big piece of Titanic on display. I did, that was good enough.

There has been some really bad weather in that area over the weekend, so maybe it’s just a broken communications antenna..............
