A frantic marine search is underway for a missing tourist submersible which has not been seen since it launched to take five people to the Titanic wreckage yesterday morning.
The Boston Coastguard and Canadian Coastguard are both now looking for the missing vessel that is operated by tour company OceanGate Expeditions.
The wreckage of the iconic ship sits 12,500ft- 2.5 miles - underwater around 370 miles from Newfoundland, Canada. OceanGate Expeditions is thought to be the only company that offers the tours.
As of 1pm Monday, the sub had just 72 hours of oxygen left, according to the US Coast Guard Admiral leading the coordinated effort to find it.
Among those onboard is British billionaire Hamish Harding. He posted excitedly on Instagram about being able to commence the dive after a bout of bad weather in Newfoundland.

That was the Russians who cannot overwhelm a third world country.
But I agree, these people have already assumed ocean bottom temperature.
“I think there was also a professor and a movie star on board.”
On a three hour tour. A three hour tour
Just the right size for a coffin of six.
With a viewing window, too!
Victor Veseco since then
I looked it up
You made me curious
“The vehicle has sensors to warn of a hull integrity problem.
Or so it says...”
I’m sure that watching that light would be a comfort until the batteries go out /sarc 🙄
Never underestimate the utility of a lair of built in flotation devices.
Being a billionaire means you’re Rick enough to pay others to take the risk for you!
Even a rescue operation for some rich guy is a learning opportunity for future rescues, so it is valuable practice for all concerned that will pay off in the future on something else.
Oh good, but they probably have already used their pants.
XD XD
Assume they're dead. Cut our losses. Send unmanned subs to fund them so we can do an autopsy.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia said the vessel was reported overdue around 9:13 p.m. Sunday, about 435 miles (700 kilometres) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Lt. Cmdr. Len Hickey said a Canadian Coast Guard vessel and military aircraft were assisting the search effort, which was being led by the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston.

David Pogue, a CBS reporter who travelled in the Titan submersible last year, told the BBC about the issues that both the submersible crew and the land crew are likely to be experiencing, saying that there is currently “no way” to communicate with the vessel as neither GPS nor radio “work under water”.
“When the support ship is directly over the sub, they can send short text messages back and forth. Clearly those are no longer getting a response,” Mr Pogue said.
He added that because the passengers are sealed inside the vessel by bolts applied from the outside, “there’s no way to escape, even if you rise to the surface by yourself. You cannot get out of the sub without a crew on the outside letting you out.”

Liking your skeptic posts!
I am surprised the sub is untethered. I bet they will be from now on.
In Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea the episode “Submarine Sunk Here”
Seaview is helpless on the bottom. A section of old sea mines prevent rescuse.
A few excerpts....
“The Seaview angle of list is more than 30 degrees which means the bell cannot be coupled to the hull. Chip breaks the news that the bell is still in New London. If they cannot find the short soon, Chip will take the bell down by controlled descent. Nelson tells the others to conserve air.”
“Bishop gets his oxygen from all the men. Chip goes back to Curley—but they have no luck yet in finding what is wrong with the bell guidance. Chip tells him this is the only bell on this coast that can go that deep.”
“Seaview moves again and the fight stops. It is settling in the mud on the bottom but Blake thinks she is breaking up. Chip makes a decision in New London, “All right Curley, let’s go!” Chip orders Curley to get going even though the bell isn’t totally fixed yet.
Seaview’s angle is 23 degrees now. Crane says, “One more wallop like that and the bell won’t do us any good.” He goes to tell the Admiral. “
“Chip or Curley look out. The bell moves against one of the chains holding the mines. Two mines blow up due to this. Seaview shakes on the bottom from this. Steam pours out. Curley tells Chip the bell is not responding to hard left. Another mine goes off. Ski says, “That was the bell..it hit a mine.” Nelson calls Chip and then the salvage barge but the phone’s dead. The angle is now 31 and the bell cannot couple with the hull. Crane tells Ski they have to believe the bell is still there. Chip does calls but can’t get through—the bell can’t reach them he says, the angle is too steep. They don’t hear him. “
((Crane suggests flooding one compartment to right the angle and one crewmember sacrifices his own life to do so inside.))
“More water pours in. Seaview turns the right angle—just perfect. The bell lands on the hull. The hatch opens, a bit of water seeps in, and light fills the area under it. Chip asks, “Permission to come aboard, sir.” Nelson grants it and all rejoice as air tanks come down.”
Too deep.
Old Red Skelton line: "If I dood it, I'll get a whoopin'... I DOOD IT!!!"
So much for RTM...
I heard the toilet was a plastic bag. Only food they take with them is a sandwich and a bottle of water. They sit on floor with backs against wall of sub. Also heard they have strips ( like flypaper) that can convert CO2 into O2.
