University puts trigger warning on Hemingway’s ‘Old Man and the Sea’: ‘graphic fishing scenes’

A university in a prominent Scottish fishing sector cautions its students that a classic Ernest Hemingway novel contains “graphic fishing scenes” that may upset some readers.

Students at the University of the Highlands and Islands are informed prior to their reading assignment that “The Old Man and the Sea” includes descriptive fishing passages, reported the Daily Mail, which obtained a copy of the warning through a public records act request.

University of the Highlands declined The College Fix’s request for comment, but a university spokesman told the Mail: “Content warnings enable students to make informed choices.”

Several professors told The Fix that a trigger warning for the novella, which earned a Pulitzer Prize in 1953, is unnecessary.

So "trigger" warnings for pictures of fishing, but pictures of sexual acts in children's books is considered an "education"?

Except for about a half a dozen actual institutions of higher education, every university needs to be razed to the ground and the earth salted so they will never come back to life.

Yeah. Smoking and drinking, fighting, fishing, hunting and occasional vulgar word are all “triggers”, but sex for children is OK?!

Jeez, snowflakes. Let them eat soy. (I bet some of them have no problem eating meat and fish that comes wrapped in styrofoam and plastic from a store.)

Do kids read books that make them think and have empathy for the human condition? The Old Man and the Sea wasn’t so much about a marlin, but about a man growing old and a boy coming to age.

Well, they’ll have to put warnings on “The Short, Happy Life of Francis McComber”, too, since it involves hunting. The fact that it’s actually about a downtrodden simp who finally finds his courage probably eludes these people.

“The fish was pulled off the hook, and it lay flopping around in the bottom of the boat. The fisherman contemplated the scene, understanding that the fish’s death was actually a blessing, since he would have something to eat for dinner.”

Get the fainting couch!

(“graphic fishing scenes”)

And it was probably written that way on porpoise, too!!

That Hemingway was a real cod!

Salmon should do something!

Maybe with the audio books they can tuna out those parts?

It’s a whale of an offense!

They should make Hemingway walk the plankton!

I trout much will come of this. But that’s just a view from my Perch.

Good thing we saw this on the ‘net.

Such graphic fishing could make someone feel eel.

We must minnow out this evil.

No use Carp-ing about it.

The book, now, will Flounder.

Then, we can put it on a Pike and grill it.

We don’t want to appear shrimpy about the whole thing.

It’s like a bass dream.

Though the whole issue seems Titanic.

Fin.

These are no doubt the same people eat their sushi with relish.

I won’t tell them about the tuna fishermen I saw using a chain saw to take off the head of a huge tuna, its eyes bugging out and mouth opening and closing.
