My question is, what brought the memes to the principal's attention in the first place? Did someone else see the memes and let him know of it? Did he spend his summer perusing the social media postings of students? Is this student the only one he follows on social media or are there others? Has he suspended others for similar conduct?

Also, the memes aren't even that bad (or even good) and certainly did not warrant punishment.

Public schools are little more than communist indoctrination camps run by thin skinned woke tyrants.

This might answer your question. From 2019...

A Closer Look: Social Media Monitoring

From the link...

...Across the country, schools are exploring tools that monitor students’ social media activity in an effort to identify “warning signs” or potential threats. In fact, the Brennan Center for Justice reports a tenfold increase in the number of districts purchasing social media monitoring technology tools from 2013 to 2018....

Public school, at least the way we do it, is doomed.

However.

I’m taking the unpopular position that if you are getting free school you do not have the right to engage in counter-mission behavior including disparaging leaders, organizing student disruptions, etc. Schools cannot exist if they can’t set and enforce standards of civility and proper behavior.

I even thought at the time it happened (and I was 18 years old) that the F the draft t-shirt case was wrongly decided.

Now, if you think school should be abolished, or that “students” not with the program should be expelled, we can have that conversation.

But disrespect and open hostility make free public education impossible, and banning it should be OK

I hope the jury award is large enough that the kid will not need any scholarships.

But teachers complain about the violation of their free speech rights when they are told not to groom their students.

Right.

If teachers, staff, and administrators want respect, then they need to stop acting like lawless hoodlums.
