I’m taking the unpopular position that if you are getting free school you do not have the right to engage in counter-mission behavior including disparaging leaders, organizing student disruptions, etc. Schools cannot exist if they can’t set and enforce standards of civility and proper behavior.
I even thought at the time it happened (and I was 18 years old) that the F the draft t-shirt case was wrongly decided.
Now, if you think school should be abolished, or that “students” not with the program should be expelled, we can have that conversation.
But disrespect and open hostility make free public education impossible, and banning it should be OK
I hope the jury award is large enough that the kid will not need any scholarships.
But teachers complain about the violation of their free speech rights when they are told not to groom their students.

If teachers, staff, and administrators want respect, then they need to stop acting like lawless hoodlums.
