Declassified Richard Nixon letter to President Clinton proves prophetic on Russia

A month before he died in April 1994, former President Richard Nixon wrote a letter to then-President Bill Clinton offering what Clinton later called "wise counsel, especially with regard to Russia." The contents of that letter have now been declassified by the Clinton presidential library and appear prophetic.

In the seven-page letter, dated March 21, 1994, and discussed by history professor Luke Nichter in the Wall Street Journal, Nixon gave a blunt assessment of the political situation in Russia, predicting accurately that relations between Moscow and Kyiv would deteriorate and that someone like Putin could come to power. Nixon, 81 at the time, wrote the letter after he returned from a two-week trip to Russia and Ukraine.

Nixon was right. Clinton did everything wrong with Russia after the USSA fell. Thanks a lot Perot.

I’m confused. How does the Clinton Library have this letter and when did a Presidential Library get the power/authority to declassify anything? Or is this just another one of those double standards?

The Clinton Library is part of the National Archives & Records Administration.

Why should anything Nixon wrote 20 years out of office have been classified in the first place?

Seriously? Correspondence automatically is unclassified after 30 years. That’s how we get to know a president’s personal letters. Trump did decide to release some personal letters for 99 dollars to anyone interested. But the rest of his letter will be released around 2050.

No exaggeration. I bet Nixon’s IQ was relatively close to Obamas and Bidens combined!!!

Nixon was probably 150ish. Obama and Biden maybe in the 90s.

Just listen to his state of the union address 1970s. His intelligence is almost palpable.

As a side not look at congress and how radically we have already changed.
