Researchers in California will leverage artificial intelligence to study bodycam footage recorded by Los Angeles police to analyze whether officers escalated interactions with the public through their language or tone.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on Tuesday announced the research initiative during the Board of Police Commissioners meeting. LAPD Cmdr. Marla Ciuffetelli said at the meeting the study will be used to help train future officers on how to best interact with the public while also promoting accountability, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“The Los Angeles Police Department is committed to leadership, quality through continuous improvement and public transparency and is forward-thinking in pursuit of training techniques and technologies that can assist us in achieving our goals,” Ciuffetelli told Fox News Digital.
“With this project, the Department hopes to gain valuable feedback to benefit our training, policies and practices. This project also reflects our unwavering commitment to public transparency and accountability.”
Rudeness is one of the top complaints members of the public file against officers with the LAPD, despite recruits learning at the police academy that what they say to the public and how they say it is critical to de-escalating interactions, the L.A. Times reported. …

While apprehending a murderer fleeing red-handed from the scene of the crime:
"Freeze, Motherf*cker, or I'll shoot! Police!" "Oh, do be a fine chap and tarry for a moment there, would you, good fellow? I am a representative of the local constabulary, and would like to have a word with you, if you don't mind!"

More and more reasons not to go into law enforcement as a career.
Having body and dash cam’s is like have your supervisor along every minute of the shift.
Tampering with government records is illegal.
Body cams also ensure that any officer who disobeys an illegal/unethical order from a superior gets caught red-handed.
Body cams are also useful for weeding out the officers who still respect the Constitution.
Please, sir. Don’t point that gun at me.
Now take the oath and you’ll be a member of the 90037 Taxing District Police Force with arresting powers throughout Los Angeles County. Your primary duty will be to the Taxing District that pays you.

Having seen what some cops do knowing that they are being recorded I hate to think what they did before!
Pip. Pip. Cheerio!
They wanted bodycams and now they find out it makes the criminal look bad ,LOL
I think it's even worse than that. Having AI go through all their video recordings is like having the most rabidly anti-police prosecutors sitting on their shoulders all the time.
(Steve Sailer has called the predictable police behavioral response to BLM/Defund the police "retreat to the donut shop". If police take their time to respond to calls, there won't be any interaction with criminals to record and for AI to screen.)
Yeah, can’t have armed agents of the state being held accountable.
A rude, aggressive tone is often called for in taking control of and handling violent, dangerous situations/individuals. God forbid a cop doing his job should offend someone in the midst of a criminal act.
Back in the day when I was sometimes violating the law and ‘interacting’ with the cops, I came to observe that as long as I didn’t violate the law they’d leave me alone. Never once out of maybe a dozen or so encounters (not including ‘many’ traffic violations...) was I just minding my own business only to be pounced upon by a rogue officer. Treated roughly sometimes, but deserved it. What an insufferable ass I was. Even moreso than now. A different time, though. Never did it occur to me to whine. I did, though, catch a lot of ribbing from my friends for being an idiot. Society kinda self regulated then, even in the cop world. The rules were universally understood.
and who says what’s aggressive... BLM???
Indeed, but it could flag something for review by a human being.
Any cop that objects to body and dash cams shouldn't be a cop.
Personally, I think that politicians should be equipped with them as well.
How about interactions with innocent civilians who did not commit any criminal acts? My experience with cops when no illegal activities have happened, is that many are downright rude and aggressive. The worst are female cops who are trying to prove they have more balls than men. I'm not talking majority, as I have worked with police and have relatives in law enforcement; but there are bad apples in the bunch out there who make people hate cops.
Interactions with innocent civilians who have not committed any criminal acts should be respectful and friendly. And yes, there are indeed bad apples who are not constituted such as to make a good police officer. I’ve too met a couple over the years. I’m OK though, on the whole, with cops establishing and maintaining a command presence in most interactions. It’s a matter of life and death for them.
