~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska

AKeielsonafb1

Eielson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force (USAF) base located approximately 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska, and just southeast of Moose Creek, Alaska. It was established in 1943 as Mile 26 Satellite Field and redesignated Eielson Air Force Base on 13 January 1948. Eielson AFB was named in honor of polar pilot Carl Ben Eielson.

Its host unit is the 354th Fighter Wing (354 FW) assigned to the Eleventh Air Force of the Pacific Air Forces. The 354 FW's primary mission is to support RED FLAG-Alaska, a series of Pacific Air Forces commander–directed field training exercises for U.S. Forces, joint offensive counter-air, interdiction, close-air support, and large force employment training in a simulated combat environment.

These exercises are conducted on the Joint Pacific Alaskan Range Complex (JPARC) with air operations flown out of Eielson and its sister installation, Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson (the former Elmendorf Air Force Base).

AKeielsonafb5

Eielson projects to have 54 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II combat aircraft assigned to the installation, of which the first two aircraft arrived on 21 April 2020. The last of the aircraft arrived in April 2022. The planes come with an estimated 3,500 personnel, to include airmen and their families as well as civilian personnel. The F-35 program increases the number of military personnel at Eielson by approximately 50%.

The 355th Fighter Squadron was reactivated on Dec. 18, 2020, the second USAF F-35A squadron stationed in the Indo-Pacific theater of operations. The combat-coded squadron's primary mission is the suppression of enemy air defenses and offensive counter-air missions.

The 356th Fighter Squadron was reactivated in October 2019, the first USAF F-35A squadron stationed in the Indo-Pacific theater of operations. The combat-coded fighter squadron is tasked primarily in offensive counter-air missions, utilizing its 5th generation advanced sensor suite and weapons to help build a more lethal force around the Pacific.

Arrived Homer June 21 years ago. Cousin Barb had a jug of vodka in the freezer that we worked on from 11:30 pm when it got dark, sort of. Great visit though you can keep the birds (mosquitos).

My wife and I drove the Alaska Highway to Fairbanks from Southern California in 2017. I still look at the pictures almost every week.

October 24

Don’t Lose Heart

Bible in a Year:

We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16

I don’t remember a time when my mom Dorothy was in good health. For many years as a brittle diabetic, her blood sugar was wildly erratic. Complications developed and her damaged kidneys necessitated permanent dialysis. Neuropathy and broken bones resulted in the use of a wheelchair. Her eyesight began to regress toward blindness.

But as her body failed her, Mom’s prayer life grew more vigorous. She spent hours praying for others to know and experience the love of God. Precious words of Scripture grew sweeter to her. Before her eyesight faded, she wrote a letter to her sister Marjorie including words from 2 Corinthians 4: “We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (v. 16).

The apostle Paul knew how easy it is to “lose heart.” He describes his life as one of danger, pain, and deprivation (2 Corinthians 11:23–29). Yet he viewed those “troubles” as temporary. And he encouraged us to think not only about what we see but also about what we can’t see—that which is eternal (4:17–18).

Despite what’s happening to us, our loving Father is continuing our inner renewal every day. His presence with us is sure. Through the gift of prayer, He’s only a breath away. And His promises to strengthen us and give us hope and joy remain true. .

Reflect & Pray

What’s causing you to be discouraged or “lose heart”? Which Scriptures are especially encouraging to you?

Precious Father, thank You for Your faithful love for me and the assurance of Your presence.

Yes, we had a wonderful session this morning.

Later on, Tippy demonstrated her new skills for a neighbor in a different setting than our training place.

That is an achievement!
