Texas State Sen. John Whitmire and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee are advancing to a runoff election for Houston mayor since neither cleared the 50% threshold.
Both stood out in a crowded field for their high levels of name recognition, decades of public service, and in Whitmire's case, a prodigious campaign war chest that enabled him to blanket the airwaves with commercials. Jackson Lee is widely considered the more progressive of the two leading candidates.

A competition between to terrible people on who gets to helm the next level of destruction of the city of Houston South Park was right all those years ago.
A choice between a douche, and a turd sandwich.
It’ll be interesting to see Houston in a few years after SJL is mayor...
I saw a result by area, Fort Bend voted 80% for Queen Sheila...
before aoc, lee was clearly the stupidest member of congress
You’re correct. AOC dethroned the long time champ. I don’t know anything about the other guy, but I’ve got to root for him
Chicago
Maxine would like a word.
We always know that the RAT wins any runoff election. So the stupid racist cow will win.
Whitmire and Lee are both Democrats.
If I were a resident of Houston, I’d vote for Whitmire - a lesser of two evils choice.
In the years, I lived in the city of Minneapolis, the GOP was a no-show. Municipal election were always a choice between a Democrat who made you sick 110% of the time vs a Democrat who only made you sick 90% of the time.
The Ft Bend county portion inside Houston city limits has a very high percentage of a specific demographic. This demographic has tended to vote as a block in the past. Have not seen the breakout but actually 80% may not be a spectacular performance for Lee.
How sad.
People will be moving in droves to san francisco, a better place to live
That’s an insult to —Guam will tip over-— Hank Johnson.
Yes. And there’s a reason for that. Back when Houston annexed wealthy parts of Kingwood for the tax base, they needed to balance Kingwood electorally to prevent the city from becoming less blue. So they went in to Fort Bend and annexed the most heavily blue area (ie. the Amish area) to keep Houston reliably blue.
I don't think that's something I'd would really like to see.
Sadly, Indianapolis is following suit. In our election last night, the two-term incumbent won reelection with over 60% of the vote. In his first eight years crime has skyrocketed, homelessness has skyrocketed, and drug use has jumped. Very few places are safe in the city anymore. When BLM/Antifa was destroying our downtown, he gave the order for the police to stand down and not engage as the city burned and was looted. But he won in a landslide. And our city council is now overwhelmingly Democrat with most incumbents winning by 40-50% margins. We will soon be following Baltimore, St Louis and others down the road of destruction. We had a great run.
I think more of Sugarland and not Missouri City.... but you are right.
