Police in England have arrested a man in connection to the death of hockey player Adam Johnson.

The man in police custody was charged with suspicion of manslaughter.

Johnson, who played for the Nottingham Panthers, died after his neck was cut by the skate blade of the Sheffield Steelers’ Matt Petgrave during an on-ice collision.

It is not yet known who has been arrested. *** Adam’s death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world. We know these communities will expect us to handle this investigation with the same professionalism, fairness and sensitivity as any other and request that members of the public refrain from comment and speculation which could hinder this process. Our thoughts remain with all affected by this devastating incident as enquiries continue.”

Johnson, 29, was a Minnesota native who played briefly with the Penguins in the NHL.

The arrest came after South Yorkshire Police said they were investigating the circumstances of Johnson’s death — which was described as a “freak accident” by the Panthers — on Oct. 31.

The victim

This isn’t the first time that this thug raised his skate to neck height in an attempt to kill another player. Videos of this incident are available on the web (graphic)

Thank you. This isn’t the first time he has given a karate kick to an opposing player.

That looks deliberate to me. He raised his leg well before the collision. I would call that first degree assault and second degree murder.

They probably had words off the ice and he was incensed about it.

From what I saw online, he’s the most penalized player by a significant margin, and has been tossed from games for being belligerent towards officials.

I cannot remember who suggested it, but he said to slow the video to a quarter speed and that clearly shows the leg going up and then the extra kick.   It is like watching a horse kick up into the air and then giving an extra kick back to harm a person or creature.

Last season, he had 129 minutes of penalties in 54 games.

That was NOT a freak accident. The video clearly shows that kick was done intentionally. Now, whether he meant to kill him is another matter entirely, but he was definitely killed by the skate to the neck.

Just the type to be allowed back in the game-—I guess the Canadian hockey honchos take their cues from out Justice System

Just as a small minority group in general society consistently commits a huge percentage of crimes, in this case a member of the same tiny minority representing a minuscule number of professional hockey players nonetheless has committed 100% of the murders.

The team management ought to be held liable for fielding a player with such a violent history.

They’re just persecuting the only black player because he’s black. He was just turning his life around.

In hockey, the most penalized players are often not very dirty players at all. They pile up penalty minutes by getting major penalties and misconducts for fighting, but fighters traditionally have an unwritten code of behavior that keeps them in line.

Yes. And looks like he knew martial arts.

Dirty player. Most penalties in the league, IIRC.
