Boeing's 737 Max 9 planes could be back in the air as soon as Friday despite serious safety concerns among airlines and passengers - with American Airlines' boss warning Thursday that the aircraft maker needs to 'get its act together'.
The FFA approved an inspection and maintenance process that will allow the Max 9 aircrafts to return to service - but said it will not approve any requests from Boeing to expand production of its killer jets.
All Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft were grounded following the harrowing Alaska Airlines blowout that forced an emergency landing when a door fell off at 16,000 feet on January 5.
'We grounded the Boeing 737-9 MAX within hours of the incident over Portland and made clear this aircraft would not go back into service until it was safe,' FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said.
'The exhaustive, enhanced review our team completed after several weeks of information gathering gives me and the FAA confidence to proceed to the inspection and maintenance phase.'
The maintenance process will require an inspection of specific bolts, guide tracks and fittings, as well as detailed visual checks of left and right mid-cabin exit door plugs and dozens of associated components.
It also includes retorquing fasteners and correcting any damage or abnormal conditions.
A Boeing spokesperson said: 'We will continue to cooperate fully and transparently with the FAA and follow their direction as we take action to strengthen safety and quality at Boeing.

Popular titanium alloy.
I would and not give it a second thought.
Re: 9 - Oh? Where’d you hear that?
Sounds made up, frankly.
“...hiding tools...”
That’s a pretty serious offense. Boeing uses chits, tool cutouts, etc to maintain tool accountability. I can’t imagine a shift could leave without all tools being accounted for.
In the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, Northwest used to note which flights were on a DC-10. This is back when the DC-10 had multiple crashes.
Perhaps the same should be done with these awful 737 MAX aircraft. Let the passengers change to alternative flights.
I don’t remember the details now. But one guy was in some kind of cage doing something... calibrating tools? I dunno? But anyway one of his complaints was people hiding his stuff or breaking things and blaming him.
He was getting bullied and driven out of the company. His manager and union foreman were working together to drum him out — or at least looking the other way while others treated him poorly.
The guy was ill-treated at all levels, but I didn’t take the case. Too much trouble when unions were involved since they often contributed to the discrimination, while introducing lots of additional labor regulations to deal with.
Other cases were more or less simple bullying by one tribe against another. Or boyfriends and girlfriends stuff. None of that was illegal, just childish and mean.
But my take away was that few adults, if any, were running the show at Boeing Renton.
It’s not just 737s its the culture. Remember it wasn’t that long ago that the US Air Force was rejecting tankers because of debris found in the walls. Clear sign of sloppy production.
I don’t fly anymore because I refuse to be treated like livestock. Safety is probably fine, relative to other forms of transportation. But I don’t have a stomach for the humiliation any more.
Boeing went for DEI,
And let quality and best person for the job go the way side.
Go woke go broke.
Hey Boeing no confidence boys.
Pound sand.
One former Boeing manager who flies all the time, refuses to get on 737 Max planes.
