One of the replacements for the CZ 455 line at the 2024 SHOT Show is the 457 Jaguar long-barreled .22 rifle. The rifle has one of the longest .22 barrels in production at 28.625 inches. It has open sights regulated from 25 to 200 meters. The long barrel allows precision shooting without a telescopic sight. The rifle replaces the 455 Ultra Lux. The wood on the Jaguar is beech and often produces an excellent figure in a rifle stock.

The exhibit of CZ rimfire rifles at the 2023 SHOT Show displays the Jaguar barrel as over four inches longer than the next longest barrels. Even with the 28.625-inch barrel, the Jaguar only weighs a comfortable 6.4 lbs. This correspondent has the older version, the Ultra Lux. It handles well. The long barrel helps to stabilize off-hand shooting. Another advantage of a long barrel is it allows more time for combustion gasses to cool and lose pressure, reducing the sound of the report when the rifle is fired. Care must be taken with very low-velocity cartridges. CCI has put a warning on their Quiet 22 ammunition. The Quiet 22 should not be fired in barrels longer than 24 inches. This author had a Quiet 22 bullet stick partway out the muzzle of his Ultra Lux rifle. The wood on the Jaguar is beech and often produces an excellent figure in a rifle stock.

With the introduction of the 457 line in CZ,the company has made improvements in their excellent rifles. The action of the 457 models are almost an inch shorter than the 455 models. They have had mass removed from the sides to reduce weight.

A lovely rifle, with the longest production barrel for a .22 this author has found. With subsonic ammunition, it is a still louder than a powerful air rifle.

Nice looking rifle! Did they have to stamp the name into the stock?

Perfect accompaniment for Pilsner Urquel.

The next shotgun I hope to buy is a CZ Bobwhite G2. I’ve always wanted a two-trigger side-by-side. Haven’t decided on 12-gauge vs. 20-gauge, but I’m leaning toward 12 because my other shotguns are 12-gauge.

Remember the 1980s when it was found a plastic soda pop bottle could be placed over the muzzle of a rifle and made a serviceable silencer?

I had an Ultra Lux, it was a very nice gun. Put a fixed 4X Burris on it.

I grew up in the thirties. My father gave my brother and me a .22 Remington tubular magazine bolt-action .22 and single shot Iver Johnson four-ten shotguns when I was about eight. Many a happy hour I spent wandering through miles of woods and abandoned farms in Montgomery County Maryland with them as a preteenager. During WWII we shot rabbits and squirrels with them for the dinner table. Sadly, my brother sold or traded them while working in a gun shop when I was in the army. I’m fairly well armed now, but I wish I had the Remington, at least for nostalgia. It was a pretty thing with memories.
