A new type of bacteria was found in 50% of colon cancers. Many were aggressive cases.

A type of bacteria that causes dental plaque may be behind a treatment-resistant form of colorectal cancer, a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature found.

The particular bacterium, which appears to shield tumor cells from cancer-fighting drugs, was found in 50% of the tumors tested in the study. The discovery, experts say, could pave the way for new treatments and possibly new methods of screening.

Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and is expected to kill more than 53,000 people in the nation in 2024, according to the American Cancer Society.

Rates are rising sharply among younger people: The percentage of people younger than 55 diagnosed with colon cancer almost doubled between 1995 and 2019, leaping from 11% to 20% of cases. What’s more, these cases are often diagnosed at later, more aggressive stages.

Experts are still struggling to explain the shift.

From the comment section: "Kids these days didn't live through the AIDS crisis and mistakenly immitate bad hygiene practices seen in porn. I think we ALL know how the bacteria didn't get destroyed via the oral route to the stomach"

You forgot the act of double-dipping with multiple partners. The good news is that the wages of sin are tax exempt.

I doubt it was introduced by the mouth.

The anus is an exit, people. Poo is nasty.

Not news, that oral bacteria can enter the blood stream. Some oral bacteria can pass thru the stomach.

By studying salivary and fecal microbial strain populations of 310 species in 470 individuals from five countries, we found that transmission to, and subsequent colonization of, the large intestine by oral microbes is common and extensive among healthy individuals.

We found evidence for a vast majority of oral species to be transferable, with increased levels of transmission in colorectal cancer and rheumatoid arthritis patients and, more generally, for species described as opportunistic pathogens.

Yeah, but warning the kids that oral sex is dangerous is apparently equivalent to genocide - so I expect Democrats to remind the Surgeon General to keep his big yap shut if he knows what is politically good for him. :)

What! They put their mouth down there?

Rimming or bottoming. A good reason to avoid getting close to gay people (or anyone doing that nasty practice).

My lovely 80-year-oid neighbor just died of colon cancer soon after she was diagnosed. Perhaps this was a factor. Very religious and lovely person.

I think GMO and processed foods are one of the reasons we are seeing so much increase in gut issues today, including cancers

Hmmmm...have there been any widespread, largely untested medical procedures done to a majority of Americans lately?

The gastrointestinal tract is abundantly colonized by microbes, yet the translocation of oral species to the intestine is considered a rare aberrant event, and a hallmark of disease.

This establishes the oral cavity as an endogenous reservoir for gut microbial strains, and oral-fecal transmission as an important process that shapes the gastrointestinal microbiome in health and disease.
